Moore Magnet, under the direction of CMCSS Teacher Anthony Johnson and the leadership and support of Principal Kim Smith began their CMC Green Certification project in October 2012. Although the school is over 50-years-old, Johnson saw great opportunities for conservation.

“The best part about the whole process is the excitement the students have about what they can do to make a difference. They are motivated to recycle and conserve resources. Their enthusiasm will bring about change that will help others to act and think differently about caring for our environment,” said Johnson.

Montgomery County Commissioner and County Mayor Pro Tem Charlie Keene, filling in for Mayor Carolyn Bowers who was out of town, congratulated the students and teachers of Moore Magnet School on their great accomplishment and thanked them for their dedication to making Montgomery County a greener community.

City of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan also congratulated the school and asked what they did to earn certification. A child from each grade level shared at least one thing that they had done including: starting a school recycling team, conserving energy, applying conservation practices to their STEM curriculum and even asking parents not to let their cars idle in order to reduce pollution.

The school team has worked hard to make changes in their classrooms and in their personal habits to become CMC Green Certified. “We incorporated the ideas from our teachers, support staff and students into our work,” added Johnson.

Principal Kim Smith commented, “I’m proud of the work of our students, teachers and support staff. Most of all I am pleased with their eagerness to apply what they have learned about conservation into their everyday lives.”

Moore Magnet School serves 500 students and employs 65 faculty and staff. To learn more about Moore’s green achievements, visit www.cmcss.net and go to Moore Magnet School.
