In an effort to increase and promote pedestrian activity, the City of Clarksville and Walk Bike Clarksville have installed walkable wayfinding signs in downtown Clarksville.

The signage, enabled by an AARP Livable Communities Challenge grant, provides directions and encourages shoppers to walk to their next destination. The signs include an arrow directing pedestrians to their next stop and provide a walk time for the trip. Signs have been placed near parking lots and high traffic intersections.

Sometimes, walking two or three blocks may seem daunting, but less so if you know the destination is reachable in just 2 or 3 minutes.

Shop Small Saturday

The celebration of a more walkable downtown coincides with a celebration of small business across the community. Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts has proclaimed November 30th as “Small Business Saturday” and urges community residents to support independent businesses and merchants throughout the year.

“Our local businesses create jobs, boost our local economy, preserve our historic downtown and make Clarksville a more complete place to shop and do business,” Mayor Pitts said. “I urge all citizens to join me on Saturday to visit some of our small, independently owned retailers and restaurants.”

Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Shop Small is a nationwide movement to celebrate small businesses every day and to help communities thrive and stay vibrant.
