City of Clarksville Employees offered unique Training Opportunity

October 25, 2013 | Email This Post Print This Post

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan and City Council Members Jeff Burkhart, Geno Grubbs, Valerie Guzman, Marc Harris, James Lewis, Wallace Redd and Joel Wallace are making a significant contribution to encourage and support City of Clarksville employees and their professional development.

Human Resources Director Will Wyatt worked with the Nashville Predators group and Bridgestone to offer a unique team building and training opportunity for City employees who choose to participate.

The event, which includes discounted tickets for the Predators hockey game, will feature Brian Poile, Director of Hockey Operations. Mr. Poile will provide a presentation on team building skills and strategies that has been tailored specifically for the City of Clarksville.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our dedicated workforce to have fun and learn from an expert about team building strategies that can help them every day in their jobs as City employees,” said Mayor Kim McMillan. “Will Wyatt has worked incredibly hard to provide this opportunity and we hope many of our City employees will choose to take part.”

Transportation will also be provided to and from the game. “Initially, we planned to travel by Clarksville Transit bus to Nashville. Each year, CTS Director Jimmy Smith budgets a special services fund for transportation costs for exactly this kind of opportunity,” said Mayor McMillan. “Put simply, the regulations in place for spending federal Department of Transportation funds specifically allow for the use of municipal buses in this situation. We were all set to go and then something incredibly generous happened: several of our City’s Council members began contacting me with offers to show their support by paying for the bus.”

Council Members Burkhart, Grubbs, Guzman, Harris, Lewis, Redd and Wallace all contacted Mayor McMillan and Mr. Wyatt congratulating them on planning this unique opportunity and offering their full support despite the fact that many of them are not able to attend the outing in person.

To show their appreciation for City employees, they generously offered to assist in paying the transportation costs associated with the trip. Even though federal regulations and the city’s budget permit the employees to travel by CTS bus, these Council Members, along with Mayor McMillan, are chartering a GrayLine bus for the trip from City Hall to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. (Under federal guidelines, CTS busses cannot be rented.) The bus will return to City Hall after the hockey game.

“I always talk about our dedicated workforce and I would match our City employees and their professionalism against any others,” said Mayor McMillan. “But I have never seen a situation where government representatives have come together to offer such generous support and encouragement as these Clarksville City Council members have. Against the backdrop of divisiveness we’ve seen in politics lately, these seven Council members are illustrating the best of public service and I know our City employees join me in thanking them for their generosity and leadership.”
