Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser, Saturday, open to all fans

Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University and Murray State meet up Saturday, the Ohio Valley Conference’s most heated rivalry briefly will be put aside as fans unite in the fight against cancer.

In between the games, Wendy’s and Chartwells will be sponsoring the Coaches vs. Cancer Chili and Potato Bar, with all proceeds benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. The Lady Govs host Murray State at 3:00pm, with the men’s game not set to tip off until 7:00pm Fans are invited to enjoy the pre-game meal while at the same time, joining up in the fight against cancer by making a donation to the American Cancer Society.

“As coaches, we have a huge audience,” head coach Dave Loos said. “There are millions of college basketball fans and that gives us, as coaches, kind of a captive audience. I think we have not only an obligation to do this, but a tremendous opportunity to make an impact and we should do so.”

Austin Peay, once again, is part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Three-Point Attack – a joint venture sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Throughout the season, fans have the opportunity to pledge donations based on three-pointers made by both the Govs and Lady Govs, or they can make a flat donation to the ACS.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the program lies in the fact that all monies raised in Clarksville remains local to help the fight against cancer in our community.

“Like most people, my family has been adversely affected by cancer,” Loos said. “My father, my mother and a younger sister have all suffered from cancer – all are deceased – so it’s important to me, for that reason, to fight this disease.”
