Blood bank shortage inspires APSU Health and Human Performance faculty to host blood drive

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Blood is desperately needed at Hospitals across Tennessee. Last week, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee called on the state’s residents to help end the blood bank shortage, and even the American Cancer Society is pleading for people to donate because, according to that organization, “blood transfusions save millions of lives in the United States every year.”

American Cancer Society's Relay for LifeClarksville, TN – As this year’s Relay For Life campaign effort approaches its close and final plans for the culminating event are almost complete, the public is invited to participate. As we continue our efforts to “Finish the Fight” in the cure for all forms of cancer, we recognize that there are many in the community who will lose the battle and succumb to the fight with cancer.

In the midst of the celebration and festivities that will take place during the Relay For Life event on May 20th, it is also a time dedicated to reflection and healing, to commemorate those who courageously fought but lost the battle in their fight with cancer.

APSU Breast Cancer 5K set for April 23rd

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On April 23rd, runners, walkers and community supporters will gather at Austin Peay State University’s Foy Fitness and Recreation Center for the Sixth Annual Austin Peay Breast Cancer 5k. Proceeds from the event, which is pet friendly, will go toward breast cancer treatment and research.

Donate blood with the Red Cross in October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Support cancer patients and others needing blood

American Red CrossClarksville, TN – During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to support cancer patients and others needing blood products.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S., with one in eight developing invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer patients may need blood products during chemotherapy, mastectomy surgery or treatment of complications.

American Cancer Society's Relay for LifeClarksville, TN – On October 13th, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life® campaign of Montgomery County will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather at the Hilldale Baptist Family Life Center for a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.

In addition to a delicious meal and fellowship with some of Clarksville’s finest volunteers, the rally will feature speakers from the community who have benefited from funds raised at Relay, will honor cancer survivors, recognize this past year’s participating teams and their contributions toward this effort and during which this year’s campaign theme will be unveiled.

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Foy Fitness and Recreation Center, in its continued effort to promote fitness that is both fun and functional for everyone, is hosting DanceFest 2015. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 31st from 9:00am-noon at the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center.

The event’s purpose is to encourage healthy lifestyles and improve the overall wellness of both students and the community. There will be several dance formats to choose from, including Zumba dance, Salsa, R&B Line Dance, Chicago-Style Stepping and International/Country Line Dance. [Read more]

Family-friendly Activities for All Ages

American Cancer Society's Relay for LifeClarksville, TN – In the midst of global change and economic recovery, on the home front families continue to be affected by cancer, touching lives in communities across the country. An equal opportunity disease, various forms of cancer affect both the young and old, people of all ethnicities, on all socio-economic levels.

These realities make the dollars donated and volunteer hours devoted to the American Cancer Society—a part of Clarksville for many years—critically important. Local volunteers are a huge part of a nationwide effort to save lives from cancer, but additional people are needed for the progress to continue.

Clarkville, TNAmerican Cancer Society's Relay for LifeAt 6:00pm on Tuesday, May 6th, local cancer survivors will be recognized for their courage and tenacity, with caregivers, volunteers, supporters and friends who will gather at the Hilldale Baptist Church Family Life Center for the Relay For Life 3rd Annual Survivors Supper.

Introduced and organized by Bill and Joan Farmer, this year’s dinner is anticipated to be another with record attendance. The Farmers are long-time supporters of Relay For Life in Montgomery County and have the support of a capable committee to help reach cancer survivors in Clarksville/Montgomery County that include Paula and Marty Williams, Tracy Davison, Glen and Debbie Shearon, Pauline Bagwell and Ben Carroll.
