Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – Clarksville Parks and Recreation announces that the McGregor Park North Extension Trailhead is now home to the largest outdoor fitness center in Clarksville, thanks to a group of Clarksville Academy students and a grant from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation.

Students in Clarksville Academy’s Challenge Based Learning program wrote the fitness center grant request, which was approved by the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation.

The foundation was created in 2006 to promote health initiatives and manage property and assets generated from the sale of the community’s public hospital.

The comprehensive outdoor fitness center and consists of 13 pieces of equipment, including an elliptical cross trainer, a recumbent cycle, two-person parallel dip station, and a two-person full bar exerciser. In addition, several pieces of equipment are wheelchair accessible. The total cost of the project was $27,405.

“Clarksville Parks and Recreation was excited to again partner with Clarksville Academy’s Challenge Based Learning Program and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation to provide this unique asset to McGregor Park,” said Jennifer Letourneau, Clarksville Parks and Recreation Director. “We extend our gratitude for their support of additions to our parks and community.”

This is the third outdoor fitness gym to be added by Clarksville Parks and Recreation; others are at Liberty Park and the Clarksville Greenway. This latest station will be heavily used after the North Extension is connected to the new Red River East portion of the Greenway, which will be built in coming months.

“Clarksville Academy students are thrilled with our city’s latest addition of exercise equipment installed at McGregor Park’s North Extension,” said Joanne Askew, Clarksville Academy’s Challenge Based Learning program director.

“Their vision was fueled by the desire to include ADA compliant equipment for our city’s residents with limited mobility. This equipment does just that. Working with our City Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation, has been a valuable stepping stone in their educational process. Investigating and collaborating with these organizations has provided Clarksville Academy students the opportunity to creatively expand their classroom, and innovative ways to implement the educational process,” stated Askew.

Students who participated in the grant process include Ian Claypool, James Downing, Marshall Finch, Landry Forte, Donovan Hardison, Leah Hayes, Nicole Hunter, Jason Herlick, Daniel Loos, Will Mabry, DJ McCormick, Noah Parker, Shaan Patel, John Ross Ransdell, Rachael Skinner, Devon Terwilliger, Ben Truex, Sam Walker, and Brody Woodson.
