Austin Peay State University students present 17th annual production of “The Vagina Monologues”

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance announce the 17^th annual production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues,” scheduled for February 23rd at 7:00pm in the APSU Clement Auditorium.

New to the performance is the University Women’s Chorus performing, “Warrior,” a song written in response to the broad daylight murder of a woman by her stalker, a former health care worker against whom she had a restraining order.

The spotlight monologue this year will be “Man-Prayer,” written by Ensler to celebrate men’s solidarity with women in ending interpersonal violence.

This year’s show is co-directed by Karina Galvan, communication major, and Nicole Swafford, English major and Women’s and Gender Studies minor. Both students are enrolled in the academic course that explores the material raised in Ensler’s show and both students are veteran performers of the show.

APSU first produced “The Vagina Monologues” in 2002. The show has been performed every year, raising more than $20,000 that has been donated to the Sexual Assault Center, Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee and Urban Ministries Safehouse in Clarksville.

APSU has joined V-Day global fundraising efforts. Through tens of thousands of communities and on college campuses, performances in over 140 countries, V-Day organizers have raised consciousness, changed laws to protect women and girls, funded rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters (often times these much needed funds kept them from closing), educated their communities, and raised over $100 million in urgently needed funds for groups doing the essential work of ending violence and serving survivors and their families.

As at previous Vagina Monologue performances, a portion of the APSU Clothesline Project will be displayed in Clement Lobby.
