Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) fifth “World Film Festival,” which makes available to the community and APSU students a series of films from around the world and from diverse languages, starts Monday, February 4th, 2019.

“It is a rare opportunity to watch and discuss recent movies produced internationally and the contents of which students would not otherwise be typically exposed to,” Dr. Christopher Konkobo, associate professor of French and francophone studies, said.

“Such exposure to foreign cultures prepares our students to start a dialogue with their peers and faculty members about the expectations and challenges of global citizenry,” stated Konkobo.

The festival’s theme this year is “The Other in Us.”

The festival starts at 5:00pm February 4th with a showing of “Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts,” an Indonesian film about a woman’s redemption and empowerment after she’s the victim of theft and rape. All the movies in the festival will be in the Morgan University Center’s Room 307.

Other films are:

  • “Bound: Africans vs. African Americans,” United States, 5:00pm February 11th
  • “The Insult,” Lebanon, 5:00pm February 18th
  • “La Soledad,” Venezuela, 5:00pm, February 25th
  • “Black Girl,” Senegal, 5:00pm March 11th

All films have English subtitles and are free.

The festival is made possible thanks to a Student Academic Success Initiative grant, support from the Department of Languages & Literature and the APSU international studies minor.
