City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville and Clarksville Transit System recently received a donation of six bus stop benches from a local Girl Scout troop.

Girl Scout Troop 773 decided to use the extra money they earned this year to give back to the community by teaming up with students at Rossview High School to build, stain and donate benches to be used at city bus stops.

“I suggested we do something different this year with our extra money, so instead of spending it on ourselves, we brainstormed ways to give back to our community,” said Ellen Morra, troop leader. “One of the girls said she would see people standing at bus stops here in the city, and in the movies everyone always sits down, so she suggested making benches for people to sit down on at bus stops.”

After finding plans for the style of bench they wanted, the group of 5th graders bought all the necessary wood and headed to Rossview High School’s shop class for assistance.

“The boys in the Structure class were so helpful,” Morra said. “We couldn’t have done it without them.”

The completion of the benches took about a week, and afterwards, the girl scouts stained and waterproofed them prior to being delivered to the city.

“They’re lovely benches, they look great,” said Arthur Bing Sr., Clarksville Transit System director. “It was a thoughtful project for them to do, everyone did a great job.”

Bing said after the bus stop sites are selected, CTS will pour cement slabs for the benches, each with a plaque that has Girl Scout Troop 773 engraved on it. Bing said they should have the benches placed by the end of July.
