Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University biology professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Dr. Dwayne Estes, APSU associate professor of biology, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, November 21st, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

He will discuss taxonomic, biogeographic and molecular studies of leafcups, a group of robust herbs that are found throughout forested habitats of eastern North America.

Only three species of leafcup were known to exist, but Estes’ research has resulted in the discovery of one new species and the realization that the Canada leafcup may actually represent several different species.

All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Estes is in his sixth year at APSU and currently serves as associate professor in the Department of Biology and as a principal investigator in the APSU Center of Excellence for Field Biology. In June 2013, he accepted a joint appointment with the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) in Fort Worth where he serves as Biodiversity Explorer.

He graduated in 2008 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology. His primary research interests include vascular plant systematics, floristics and biogeography of eastern North America, and the vegetation of Tennessee.

Sessions of the Provost Lecture Series can be viewed live. Past lectures are available to view on iTunesU. Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303.
