APSU student awarded $500 scholarship from Edelweiss Club for 2011-12

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Andrea Yarbrough, an Austin Peay State University German language major, was awarded a $500.00 scholarship from the Clarksville Edelweiss Club for the 2011-12 academic year.

Jim Nolan, president of the local Edelweiss Club, recently presented Yarbrough with the Clarksville Edelweiss Club Scholarship. The club awards the annual $500.00 scholarship to an APSU student who is majoring or minoring in German.

Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Association of Realtors is hosting the 2011 Block Party for the 4th Annual F.U.E.L. Fundraiser. Be sure to stop by Center Pointe Drive between 10:00am and 2:00pm on April 30th, 2011

There will be Food, Entertainments, Kids Zone, Pony Rides, Dunking Booth, Inflatables, Pet Adoptions, Crafts, Shopping and so much more. Tickets are only $5.00.

There is nothing more heartbreaking than to look into the face of a hungary child.

F.U.E.L. is a food subsidization program designed to feed children whose only food source may be the food they are receiving at school.

Heritage Bank Awards $26,000 in Scholarships to Area Students

Heritage BankClarksville, TN – Heritage Bank has awarded 52 students at 30 area schools $500.00 scholarships. The scholarships were made possible by the 8 year old Heritage Bank Scholarship Fund. Since founding the fund, the bank has awarded college scholarships totaling $170,000 to 340 students selected from the various communities that Heritage Bank serves. This scholarship fund is one of the largest efforts made to enhance the educational endeavors for students of Western Kentucky and Tennessee.

APSU Professor Browder Donates First Image of Laser to the Smithsonian

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The fate of the original photograph remains somewhat of a mystery. Shortly after that night in 1963, when a young Army photographer named Dewey Browder stood atop Pikes Peak in Colorado and snapped the first picture of light coming from a laser, the National Bureau of Standards sent the image off to the Smithsonian Institute. That’s where the trail goes cold. The picture was never seen again.

Here’s what likely happened – when the photo arrived in Washington, D.C., it was placed in a cardboard box and put in storage because the American History Museum’s Electricity Collection was moving into a newly built facility. The historic picture is probably still in that box, locked away in some enormous warehouse with other forgotten treasures. [Read more]

APSU alumna who now is president at Columbia State to speak at Commencement

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University alumna who has served at the helm of two community colleges in the last 11 years will be the keynote speaker at APSU’s 82nd Spring Commencement.

Dr. Janet F. Smith (’69, ‘71), president of Columbia State Community College, will speak at both commencement events, with the first beginning at 10:00am and the second at 2:00pm, Friday, May 6th. Both ceremonies will be held in the Dunn Center.

APSU’s new course suggestion tool gains national spotlight in higher education

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has gained national attention in the higher education circle with the launch of its new Course Recommendation System, which helps to pair a student with courses that best fit his/her talents and program of study.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, a Washington, D.C.-based weekly publication of news and information for college and university faculty members and administrators, featured APSU’s new tool in its April 10th, 2011 issue.
