Five APSU Professors Honored with Annual Socrates Award
Clarksville, TN – Five Austin Peay State University professors have been singled out by their students and peers as exceptional teachers this year, earning them one of the University’s top distinctions for tenure-track faculty members.
Michelle Rogers, biology instructor, Christina Chester-Fangman, assistant professor of library administration, Dr. Benita Bruster, assistant professor of teaching and learning, Dr. David Nelson, assistant professor of history, and Dr.Mercy Cannon, assistant professor of English, were named this year’s Socrates Award winners, an honor bestowed by APSU annually to teachers who have excelled in motivating and inspiring their students. Travis Russell signs Basketball Scholarship with Bethel University
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school, is pleased to announce the signing of Travis Russell to Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. Travis has played basketball at CA for the past 2 years and was a part of the 2010 Class 10A Basketball team.
Travis not only received a partial basketball scholarship, but also received an academic scholarship. Head of Schools Kay Drew, “Travis’ success on the court is what put him on Bethel’s list of prospects, but his success in the classroom is what helped him secure a full scholarship. We couldn’t be more proud of Travis and his success.” Travis will report to Bethel in August and take on the new role of Wildcat.

APSU awards 2 top student honors at annual Honors and Awards Day ceremony
Clarksville, TN – A mathematics and physics major who will pursue her doctoral degree at Stanford University on a full scholarship and a history student who has become a mentor for transfer and nontraditional students received the two top student awards during Austin Peay State University’s annual Academic Honors and Awards Day ceremony.
Casey McKnight was named the recipient of the William McClure Drane Award, and Deanna B. Carter received the Harvill-Civitan Citizenship Award. [Read more]
Clarksville Academy announces New Head of Upper School
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school, is pleased to announce the addition of Mike Marciano has Head of Upper School. Head of Schools, Kay Drew announced Thursday, that Coach Marciano would be joining the Cougar family in a full time position. Marciano currently serves as Assistant Football Coach. “When Ms. Colleen White told me she wanted to retire, I knew I had big shoes to fill. Joe Snow Memorial Bass Tournament Rescheduled
Montgomery County, TN – The Joe Snow Memorial Bass Tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 30th, has been postponed due to the weather.
It is rescheduled for Saturday, May 21st at Dyers Creek in Dover, TN. Other than the date and location change, all other event specifics will remain the same. [Read more]
CMCSS Announces Elementary Principal Appointments
Montgomery County, TN – Two new principals have been selected to fill the open positions at Byrns Darden and Burt Elementary Schools for the 2011-12 school year.
Diana Hara, currently assistant principal at Hazelwood Elementary, will be principal at Burt Elementary, replacing Irene Gudgeon who is retiring at the end of this school year.
Andy Lyons, currently assistant principal at Barkers Mill Elementary, will serve as principal at Byrns Darden Elementary. He replaces Michelle Rayle, who has been named as assistant principal at Northeast and Rossview High Schools. [Read more]
APSU Presidential Research Scholars Program announces students for 2011-12
Clarksville, TN – Ten undergraduate students at Austin Peay State University have been chosen for the 2011-12 Presidential Research Scholars Program.
Students in the program were selected for the May 1st, 2011, to April 30th, 2012, award period. The Research Scholars Program works to promote independent research training and creative activity with scholarly merit and supports the incorporation of research training into the collegiate educational experience. Clarksville, TN – The Office of Student Affairs at Austin Peay State University honored leadership and service by individual students, student organizations and faculty and staff at its Student Organization and Leader Awards Program held April 13th.
The annual program’s focus is recognizing students, student organizations, faculty and staff who have made an impact throughout the year, Student Affairs Programs Director Tammy Bryant said.

Millions of Americans to Unite on Thursday, May 5th, for the 60th Annual Observance of the National Day of Prayer
Clarksville, TN – As American troops remain in harm’s way, fighting for democracy and liberty around the globe, citizens of the United States are preparing to celebrate their freedom to gather, worship, and pray. Millions will answer the call to prayer on May 5th in observance of the 60th annual National Day of Prayer. Organized events will be held in thousands of public venues where intercession will be made for America and its leadership.
This year’s theme, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” is based on Psalm 91:2: “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” National Day of Prayer Task Force (NDPTF) Chairman Shirley Dobson, wife of Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson, said, “At this perilous and uncertain juncture in our country’s history, it is critical that we remain in prayer.
