High school students will learn to code a video game at Google’s Edge camp held on Austin Peay State University’s campus this summer.

Earlier in the year, the tech giant awarded APSU’s Department of Computer Science and Information Technology a $20,000 grant to host several camps on the APSU campus.

These five-day camps are open to high school students, eighth through twelfth grade, and first-year college students.

EDGE Camp

For the second year in a row, the department will host two Educational Developing Games Experience (EDGE) camps in APSU’s Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building.

This free camp will be offered in two identical sessions, with the first session taking place June 4th through June 8th, and the second session taking place June 18th through June 22nd. Sessions lasts from 9:30am-3:30pm, and each day, students will explore a different gaming genre, from puzzle to adventure to platformers, receiving the tools and encouragement needed to take an unfinished game and brainstorm ways to make it their own.

HTML/CSS/Javascript Camp

With more and more people going online, knowing how to create and style websites is a much-needed skill. High school students can get started with the backbone of the web and make their own websites using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. This camp costs $179.00 and runs from May 29th through June 1st.

Python Camp

An elegant language that focuses on readability and simplicity, Python is used in everything from scientific data analysis to user interfaces. This camp, which costs $199.00, will teach this great language to computer enthusiasts at any level. The camp runs from June 11th through June 15th.

Java Camp

Used in more than three billion devices, Java is everywhere. Knowing it is an invaluable skill that can be used in any field, from games to business. Attendees will learn how to work with computing and think Java during this camp, from June 25th through June 29th. The cost is $199.00.
