Clarksville’s Hazelwood Elementary School Selected as State Nominee for National Title 1 School

Clarksville-Montgomery County School System - CMCSSClarksville, TN – Hazelwood Elementary School has been nominated by the state for the National Title I Distinguished School Award for sustained student achievement.

The National Title I Distinguished Schools Program is a project of the National Title I Association, established to publicly recognize qualifying Title I schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students.

It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students.

The program has been in place since 1996, showcasing the success of hundreds of schools in one of two categories:

Schools in Category I are recognized for showing a high level of sustained student achievement. The school must demonstrate exceptional student performance for at least two consecutive years. Hazelwood has been a Reward School for two years. Schools also must serve students, at least 35 percent of whom are a poverty level.

The criteria for the selection is based on requirements of the National Title I Association and then some are TDOE rules. The school will receive a visit from the state department of education.

CMCSS ESL Program Recognized

The District’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program was recognized at the TN ESL Directors’ Conference. When compared to the eight Tennessee districts with the largest ESL populations, CMCSS was recognized as have:

  1. Highest percentage of ESL students – Grades 3-8 – Proficient/Advanced in English/Language Arts
  2. Highest percentage of ESL students – Grades 3-8 – Proficient/Advanced in Math
  3. Significantly closed the achievement gap when comparing ESL students’ achievement to their Non-ESL peers
