Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Earlier this month, dozens of middle and high school students stopped by the Austin Peay State University campus to participate in the Eighth Annual Black History Bowl.

“We had a good attendance with three middle school teams competing against each other and three high school teams competing against each other,” Dr. Barbara Peterson, APSU associate professor of education, said. “There was a heightened level of excitement and anticipation for this year’s event.”

The APSU Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) hosted the scholastic event, which had teams facing off in a “Jeopardy”-style competition. Players from each school were required to answer questions on several different topics pertaining to black history.

The participating schools, and how they placed in the event, include

  • Northwest High School – first place
  • Kenwood High School – second place
  • Clarksville High School – third place
  • Rossview Middle School – first place (middle school competition)
  • Northeast Middle School – second place
  • New Providence Middle School – third place

The STEA club partnered with APSU’s Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center, the APSU ROTC program and the College of Education’s Project MORE Scholars to host the event. Peterson said they’re already planning the Ninth Annual Black History Bowl, which is tentatively set for January 31st, 2014.
