The economic data were mixed, but mostly disappointing. Consumer confidence improved in September and the Case-Shiller Home Price Index continued to rise. Real GDP rose at a 1.3% annual rate in the 3rd estimate for 2Q12 (vs. +1.7% in the 2nd estimate). Personal income rose 0.1% in August (+3.5% y/y). Spending rose 0.5%, but gasoline accounted for about 80% of that. The PCE Price Index rose 0.4% (+1.5% y/y), up 0.1% ex-food & energy (+1.6% y/y) – trending below the Fed’s 2% target. Durable goods orders plunged 13.2%, partly reflecting a drop in civilian aircraft orders (which went negative due to order cancelations). [Read more]
Austin Peay State University exploring cutting-edge friction stir welding process
Clarksville, TN – In 1991, The Welding Institute in England discovered a strange new method for joining two metals together without melting the two pieces in a traditional fusion welding process.
The process, known as friction stir welding, softened and deformed the metals and then forged them together as one using a rotating tool. The welding process used heat and force to join the metals, similar in nature to the way blacksmiths forged swords and armor in the Middle Ages.

Eight APSU ROTC cadets named Distinguished Military Graduate
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University had eight ROTC cadets designated Distinguished Military Graduates, representing the top 20 percent in the nation among 5,592 cadets.
One of APSU’s eight cadets, Sean Hunt – who received the prestigious Legion of Valor Bronze Cross Award last month – is ranked No. 11 in the nation.
APSU announces 2 college preview days, known as AP Day
Clarksville, TN – High school students interested in knowing more about attending Austin Peay State University are encouraged to visit campus during AP Day, October 6th or November 3rd, both of which are Saturdays.
University faculty, staff and students will provide the same informational sessions and activities on both days, scheduled from 12:30pm-5:00pm. [Read more]

APSU music professor Gail Robinson-Oturu to perform in Hopkinsville on Saturday
Clarksville, TN – Acclaimed soprano and Austin Peay State University professor of music Gail Robinson-Oturu will join composer and pianist Roland Carter at 7:30pm on September 29th for a special concert, “Music of the Heart,” at the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville, KY.
The event, sponsored by the Pennyroyal Arts Council, will kick off that community’s Alhambra Concert Series. [Read more]
Etcetera art exhibit comes to APSU on October 8th
Clarksville, TN – Artist Jennifer Oliphant wants to create a new appreciation for the beauty of everyday objects. That’s what she has in mind when she sets out to capture images with her camera.

“Bowl-a-Thon” for Empty Bowls to be hosted by Hands on Clarksville, Professor Ken Shipley and APSU Ceramics Department October 6th, 2012
Clarksville, TN – Hands on Clarksville invites the community to the second annual Empty Bowls “bowl-a-thon” hosted by Ken Shipley, Associate Professor Peay State University on Saturday, October 6th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the Trahern building located on campus.
The purpose of the “Bowl-a-Thon” is to produce a bowls for the “Empty Bowls” project. “Empty Bowls” is an annual joint fundraiser to raise money for Loaves and Fishes and Urban Ministries Grace Assistance Food Pantry and to raise awareness about hunger issues in our community. [Read more]
