Lady Govs volleyball to participate in Run for the Fallen

August 20, 2010 | Print This Post

Run for the FallenAustin Peay State University’s volleyball team will be among the thousands nationwide participating in the third Run for the Fallen, Saturday, at Waholi Pavilion at Fort Campbell.

The event began in 2008 when a small team of runners ran across the United States to raise awareness about the lives of those service members who fought, keep the spirit of those who fell in action alive and to support organizations that help wounded veterans and the families of those killed. Last year, more than 5,000 participants in 35 states and four countries ran a combined total of more than 31,000 miles.

“We are excited to participate in Run for the Fallen,” said Lady Govs junior libero Paige Economos. “It’s a great opportunity to show the Fort Campbell community our support. The military is an important part of the Clarksville community and it is important to support it when we can.”

The event has special meaning to Lady Govs head coach Haley Janicek, whose brother Cole was killed in action while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Also, her husband Matt is currently serving overseas. She will participate in this year’s event at Fort Campbell with her mother, Christi, and the Lady Govs volleyball team.

“We are honored to participate in this year’s Run for the Fallen event,” said Janicek. “These soldiers and their families have given the ultimate sacrifice and have ensured our freedom, which ultimately allows us to compete in the sport we love. Over the years, Austin Peay has enjoyed an outpouring of support from Fort Campbell and the soldiers that are a part of our community. It is an honor for us to do something in return that shows our gratitude to the fallen and the fighting.”
