Hamburger Hill Veterans return to Fort Campbell

Fort Campbell, KY – Dozens of Vietnam-era, 101st Airborne Division Veterans will return to Fort Campbell, May 12th – 13th, to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.
The 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, “Iron Rakkasans” will welcome the Veterans back to Fort Campbell and will host several events in their honor.

THDA Announces Special Rate for Veterans

Clarksville, TN – A special mortgage interest rate discount has been approved for active and retired members of the military by Tennessee Housing Development Agency’s Board of Directors.
Service members can apply for the “Homeownership for the Brave” discount which is a ½-percent interest reduction on any of the three mortgage choices at lenders working with THDA. THDA offers 30-year fixed rate mortgages, with or without downpayment assistance, for persons of low to moderate income. The program began April 1st and is available through March 31st, 2012. 4th Annual Poker Run to Benefit Montgomery County Veterans Transportation

Clarksville, TN – Rolling Thunder Kentucky Chapter 1 will host its 4th annual poker run to benefit the Montgomery County Veterans Transportation Services on Saturday, May 14th, 2011 at Appleton Harley-Davidson/Buell in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The entry fee is $10.00 and registration begins at 9:00am. There will be food, music and prizes for participants. All bikes depart from and return to Appleton’s on 2501 Highway 41A Bypass in Clarksville. [Read more]

Program Trains Veterans for Jobs in the Green Building Industry
Fort Campbell, KY — Mission Green Campbell Crossing, Operation Stand Down Nashville and Tennessee State University recently joined forces to provide opportunities and resources for Veterans in the Greater Nashville and Fort Campbell area. The program is called Mission Green and it focuses on training Veterans for jobs in the green building industry.
Mission Green is developing, what they call, the “Green Collar Workforce”, by teaching participants the skills and knowledge that they need to be proficient as entry level technical installers in the green building industry. Topics that will be covered during the training courses include the Department of Energy’s (DOE) weatherization requirements for the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), which includes testing the diagnostics of homes through cost effective weatherization measures. Veterans Get Academic Help Prior to Enrolling in School

Clarksville, TN – Troops throughout the U. S. are returning from deployment. Many of them hope to use the Post-911 GI Bill or Vocational Rehabilitation to pursue college or technical school training. While they apply for benefits, most reflect that it has been quite some time since they were in school.
Filing for benefits is one challenge, but by far the biggest ordeal —hitting the books—lies ahead.

Cold wet weather could not drown out the spirit at the 2009 NCC Intertribal Powwow

The Native Cultural Circle closed out their 12th Annual Intertribal Powwow Sunday. The Powwow showcases the culture, heritage, and traditions of all Native Americans. The Powwow opened Saturday morning with the third annual Trail of Tears Memorial Walk.
The walk remembers the plight of the Native Americans forced from their ancestral homes to the Indian territory in what became the State of Oklahoma. Diary records of the removal mentioned Port Royal, the last stop before leaving Tennessee, as an encampment site where the Cherokee stayed to re-supply, grind corn and rest. Hundreds of Cherokee died during their trip west, and thousands more perished as a consequence of relocation.
