APSU to host recital with Kate Rawls, Mei-En Chou

Recital presented APSU Department of Music, Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts will present a guest artist recital by soprano Kate Rawls and pianist Mei-En Chou on Thursday, September 17th at 7:30pm in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall on the University campus.

The varied program will feature beautiful, melodic songs and arias by J.S. Bach, Amy Beach, Gabriel Fauré and contemporary American composer, Ben Moore, as well as two exciting and atmospheric solo piano works by Ravel and Bolcom.

Acuff Circle to honor Mabrys at Jazz in June event

Acuff Circle of ExcellenceClarksville, TN – The Acuff Circle of Excellence will honor George and Sharon Mabry at the organization’s summertime Jazz in June on June 12th. The event, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, will be at Beachaven Vineyards and Winery, and the public is invited.

The Circle, a non-profit organization affiliated with the Austin Peay State University Foundation, serves as a patron society of the University’s Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, and advances the importance of arts and culture at the University and in the community. The endowed Acuff Circle of Excellence Arts Scholarship is awarded each year to an APSU student majoring in the fine arts.

Writers’ Hour Featured during Customs House Museum’s Annual Women’s History Month Exhibition

Clarksville's Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – On March 31st, the Customs House Museum will present a Writers’ Hour event in conjunction with its invitational exhibit celebrating women artists.

Local authors will read from their works that are themed to the museum’s show, In the Garden.

“The museum has held several readings in the past,” states Exhibits Curator Terri Jordan. “It is interesting to hear the variety of poems and stories from our local writers. Often funny, and sometimes sad, the audience is always blown away with the talent we have in the Clarksville area.”

APSU professor Karen Crow to represent Mid-South in National Vocal Competition

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Karen Crow, Austin Peay State University adjunct professor of voice, has been chosen to represent the Mid-South Region in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award (NATSAA) competition at the association’s upcoming National Conference in Boston this July.

The competition is held biennially in conjunction with the association’s National Conference.

Austin Peay professor Sharon Mabry to speak at Woodward Library Society event April 21st

Woodward Library Society Clarksville, TN – Dr. Sharon Mabry may be a nationally renowned singer and performer, but the Austin Peay State University professor of music is also a gifted storyteller. Have you heard her tell the one about her concert in Boston, when the hotel gave away her reservation?

“Finally the (concierge) says, ‘well OK, I found a place for you to go,’” Mabry said. “We followed him through this beautiful lobby, we followed him out the back door, down an alley way into this strange place, knocked on a door that looked like a speakeasy. There was this long hallway with bare bulbs everywhere. It ended up, we stayed in these little cubicles for the night. These cells. There was no television. There was just a bed. It was clean but that’s about all you can say.”

Woodward Library Society supports APSU library

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In 2005, the Austin Peay State University Felix G. Woodward Library had around 185,000 visitors a year. Today, with a renovated lobby, new computers and study areas, a writing center and a Starbucks coffee shop, the yearly door count is around 653,000.

“Eight years ago, we had 185,000 for the whole year, and now we’re going to see 100,000 students come in this month,” Joe Weber, director of the library, said.

Dr. Larry Hoehn, professor emeritus in mathematics, learned recently that two manuscripts he co-authored were accepted for publication. “A 5-Circle Incidence Theorem” was accepted for the Mathematics Magazine published by the Mathematical Association of America. “Zwei Kreistheoreme für affin–metrische Ebenen” was accepted for publication in German in the Mitteilungen der Mathematischen Gesellschaft publication.
