Teach Tennessee Fellows begin summer training

A chemist, research scientist and physical therapist are among the group of over 25 individuals making a career change this summer to become a teacher through the Tennessee Department of Education’s Teach Tennessee program. Teach Tennessee is a statewide transitional licensure program created by Governor Phil Bredesen that addresses the need for classroom teachers by challenging mid-career professionals, retirees and others to teach.

Twenty-eight “Governor’s Fellows” from 20 Tennessee counties, Alabama and Florida will begin their training this week to earn certification to teach this fall.
“These types of focused, skilled, professional instructors are exactly what we need in the classroom as we move forward with implementation of the STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – initiatives of Race to the Top,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. [Read more]
2010 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards

NASHVILLE, TN – Governor Phil Bredesen and Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke announced the winners of the 2010 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards today. The 14 winners will be recognized for their achievements and positive impact on the state’s natural resources in an awards ceremony to be held in Nashville on June 24th.
“Tennesseans continue to make tremendous strides to protect and preserve our environment,” said Bredesen. “This year’s roster of honorees is exemplary. Country Super Group Asks Tennesseans to “Show Your Pride” in new Public Service Announcement
NASHVILLE, TN – If life is a highway, it’s a messy one in many parts of Tennessee, so country music super group Rascal Flatts is joining the Tennessee Department of Transportation to ask Tennesseans to do their part to clean it up by adopting a highway. Rascal Flatts members Gary LeVox, Joe Don Rooney and Jay DeMarcus are featured in a new 30 second public service announcement and on billboards across the state encouraging Tennesseans to “Show Your Pride and Adopt-A-Highway today”. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of the volunteer program, encourage more participation and to remind motorists to Stop Litter in Tennessee.
In the new 30 second PSA, Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney picks up a piece of litter tossed along the side of a roadway and asks, “Think this is no big deal?”, as vocalist Gary LeVox remarks, “Think about 12 million pounds of it.” [Read more]
Community leaders presented with economic development award

Executives from Business Facilities magazine visited Clarksville on Tuesday to present community leaders with the publication’s Silver Award for 2009 Economic Deal of the Year. The award was based on Hemlock Semiconductor’s decision to base their $2.5 billion polysilicon plant in Clarksville.

Ted Coene, co-president of Group C Media, the publisher of Business Facilities, and senior account executive Ben Nachsin were on hand to present the award to the Economic Development Council, represented by EDC Chairman Mark Holleman; the Industrial Development Board, represented by current Chairman Bryce Sanders and Past Chairman Sammy Stuard; Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers; and City Mayor Johnny Piper who was represented by City Councilman David Allen, due an unavoidable conflict.
