Austin Peay State University Hall of Fame to reach 100 members as Bailey, Haynes, Holt to be inducted Saturday

APSU Sports: APSU Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Jay Bailey, an All-American running back who owns the school single-season rushing record; Ashley Haynes, the versatile forward who scored 1,000 points and grabbed 1,000 rebounds in her illustrious career, and Cheryl Holt, who led Austin Peay volleyball to 19 straight Ohio Valley Conference tournament appearances, including the 1991 tourney title, will be inducted into the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday.

The 9:00am, induction ceremonies in the Dunn Center’s front lobby will see the APSU Athletic Hall of Fame grow to 107. The newest inductees and their families also will be honored during halftime ceremonies of APSU men’s basketball home contest against UT Martin.

Clarksville Montgomery County School System names new Clarksville High School Principal

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – Jean Luna, who has served as assistant principal at Clarksville High, has been appointed by Schools Director Mike Harris as the new CHS principal.

“To be appointed principal of Clarksville High School is a great honor. The history and traditions connected with CHS make it a very special place within the community. I’m excited to work collectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and stakeholders to continue the excellence associated with being a Wildcat,” Mrs. Luna said.

U.S. Department of Veterans AffairsWashington, D.C. – Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5th, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30th. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. [Read more]

Two local women are on their way to Alabama to offer their services

American Red CrossClarksville, TN – Rithy Essing and Lonzetta Cleveland are local volunteers with the American Red Cross Clarksville-Montgomery County Chapter and on a national Red Cross registry for disaster volunteers. This is their first week in a two-week volunteer stint providing mass care services in tornado-ravaged Alabama.

“We’re on a national register as mass care shelter specialists and when there is a major event somewhere in the United States, they contact people that are on the register and see if they’re available,” they said Monday.
