Austin Peay State University Hall of Fame to reach 100 members as Bailey, Haynes, Holt to be inducted Saturday

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Jay Bailey, an All-American running back who owns the school single-season rushing record; Ashley Haynes, the versatile forward who scored 1,000 points and grabbed 1,000 rebounds in her illustrious career, and Cheryl Holt, who led Austin Peay volleyball to 19 straight Ohio Valley Conference tournament appearances, including the 1991 tourney title, will be inducted into the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday.

The 9:00am, induction ceremonies in the Dunn Center’s front lobby will see the APSU Athletic Hall of Fame grow to 107. The newest inductees and their families also will be honored during halftime ceremonies of APSU men’s basketball home contest against UT Martin.

WAPX-FM 91.9 at APSU to broadcast Austin Peay Governors Basketball game against rival Murray State

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Radio station WAPX-FM at Austin Peay State University will broadcast live Lady Governors and Governors basketball in OVC action from the Dunn Center beginning Saturday, January 7th against conference foe Murray State University.

Coverage will begin at 2:45pm with the Lady Govs pre-game show featuring head coach Carrie Daniels. Tipoff for the Lady Govs is at 3:00pm.

Pre-game for the men’s contest starts at 6:45pm with tipoff at 7:00pm. [Read more]

Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser, Saturday, open to all fans

Austin Peay State UniversityCoaches vs CancerClarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University and Murray State meet up Saturday, the Ohio Valley Conference’s most heated rivalry briefly will be put aside as fans unite in the fight against cancer.

In between the games, Wendy’s and Chartwells will be sponsoring the Coaches vs. Cancer Chili and Potato Bar, with all proceeds benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. The Lady Govs host Murray State at 3:00pm, with the men’s game not set to tip off until 7:00pm Fans are invited to enjoy the pre-game meal while at the same time, joining up in the fight against cancer by making a donation to the American Cancer Society. Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay community flexed its muscles, Sunday, when more than 80 volunteers gathered to supply holiday groceries to the Lincoln Homes Community – a section of low-income housing adjacent to Austin Peay’s main campus – as part of the Govs Give Back.

The second-year project, spearheaded by the Austin Peay Fellowship of Christian Athletes, included volunteers from many Governors and Lady Govs sports teams through the Student Athlete Advisory Council, as well as the Baptist Student Ministry, the Church of Christ Student Ministry, UCHURCH and AQUA. Austin Peay State University Library creates digital collection of student newspapers dating back to 1930

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – What was the first day of basketball practice like for the Lady Govs way back in the fall of 1930? According to the November 26th edition of The All State, the student-run newspaper of Austin Peay Normal School, from that year, “Coach Jackson has started the old basketball grind with only a few of the 1929 squad back as candidates for their old positions on the team.”

If sports isn’t your thing, maybe you’re wondering what campus life was like at the then Austin Peay State College during World War II. In the March 19th, 1943, edition of The All State, students learned the disappointing news that there would be no spring break that year. [Read more]

14th Annual Ladies Golf Tournament slated for May 25th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The 14th Annual Ladies Golf Tournament, sponsored by Austin Peay State University athletics, will be held Wednesday, May 25th at Swan Lake Golf Course.

The four-person scramble is held to help promote awareness of women’s sports in the Clarksville community. The 18-hole tournament, which will begin with an 8:00am shotgun start that day (7:30am registration), costs $55.00 per person, including green fees, breakfast and lunch. Teams will be flighted at the tournament’s completion and cash prizes will be awarded. All entries must be postmarked by May 18th.

In addition, James Corlew Chervolet-Cadillac again is sponsoring a hole in one contest that will net the lucky winner a car lease for a year.

APSU celebrates the first Women in Athletics event

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – It’s time to laud all current and former female athletes at Austin Peay State University, and for that endeavor, a new event is planned to recognize the growth of women’s sports and raise funds for a new endowment.

For the inaugural year, the 2011 Austin Peay Celebrates Women in Athletics, scheduled for April 8th-9th, will spotlight the 25th anniversary of the Lady Govs softball program. In addition, the softball field will be named in honor of Cheryl Holt, a longtime coach and assistant athletic director at APSU.

Lady Govs volleyball to participate in Run for the Fallen

Run for the FallenAustin Peay State University’s volleyball team will be among the thousands nationwide participating in the third Run for the Fallen, Saturday, at Waholi Pavilion at Fort Campbell.

The event began in 2008 when a small team of runners ran across the United States to raise awareness about the lives of those service members who fought, keep the spirit of those who fell in action alive and to support organizations that help wounded veterans and the families of those killed. Last year, more than 5,000 participants in 35 states and four countries ran a combined total of more than 31,000 miles. [Read more]
