This Week at APSU: Govs Football hopes to follow up on its rout of Jacksonville State

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) football team hopes to protect the Fort again following their September 28th rout of conference rival (and then No. 11-ranked) Jacksonville State and the subsequent bye week. The Govs host Southeast Missouri at 2:00pm Saturday, October 12th.

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – The Clarksville Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) brought their website back online Thursday, July 12th.

The site was taken down after the systems security was breached by hackers on Sunday, June 10th.

Student Staff Garners Awards

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The All State, Austin Peay State University’s student newspaper, was named fourth best college newspaper in the south at the annual Southeast Journalism Conference held February 9th-11th at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Eight student staff members attended the annual conference, several of whom earned regional honors for their work. The All State ranked higher than all other Tennessee colleges competing and above a number of student newspapers from much larger journalism programs across the south.

A total of 34 colleges and universities entered the competition for Best College Newspaper in the South. [Read more]

First Clarksville Police Officer killed in the line of Duty by gunfire

On the morning of February 13th, 1974, FBI Agent Frank Christian came to the police station  to report seeing a black male carrying a shotgun walking south on 2nd Street.  Officers Kenneth Browning and Joe Mixon left headquarters to locate the individual. Joe Mixon had been with the Department about a year and Browning had left the Dickson Police Department with 3-4 years of service and had only been with the Clarksville Police Department a few months.

They approached 2nd Street in the area of the US Post Office when they saw the black male, later identified as Howard Gentry, 42 standing at the intersection of Madison and 3rd Street.  Gentry had been described as a loner and his mother had sought help for his deteriorating mental state of mind.
