Austin Peay State University College of Education prepares local teachers for 2017 solar eclipse

June 24, 2016

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – More than 4,000 years ago, Chung K’ang, the fourth emperor of the Hea dynasty in China, reportedly executed two astronomers named Hi and Ho because they didn’t predict a solar eclipse.

“So (an eclipse) is a very important thing; it can be life-threatening,” Dr. Rex Gandy, Austin Peay State University provost and vice president of academic affairs, joked recently. “And it’s pretty amazing. The sun is 90 million miles away, and it’s huge, so what are the odds that there is this little rock a quarter million miles away that just blots out the sun almost perfectly.”

Clarksville Weekly Market Snapshot from Frazier Allen for the week of October 4th, 2015

October 4, 2015

F&M Investment Services - Raymond James - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – The economic data were mixed, but consistent with the theme of global softness and domestic strength. Unit auto sales improved further in September – and, combined with the August data on personal income and spending, suggest that inflation-adjusted consumer spending (70% of GDP) is on track to have expanded at an annual pace of 3.5% to 4.0% in 3Q15.

The trade deficit in goods widened sharply in August, with that split evenly between stronger imports (despite lower oil prices) and weaker exports. Net exports and an inventory correction are expected to subtract significantly from 3Q15 GDP growth, but underlying domestic demand appears to have remained strong.

September 23, 2015

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In July, Austin Peay State University music education student Davey Edmaiston boarded an airplane for the first time. If he was nervous, the Troy, Tennessee, native probably calmed himself by thinking about the importance of his trip. In a few hours, he’d land in Washington, D.C., to ask members of the U.S. Congress to make music education a priority for American school children.

“I’d never been anywhere out of the state before. First plane ride and everything. My mom was pretty scared,” Edmaiston said. “But we got to meet with senators and House representatives and talk about the Every Child Achieves Act, which identifies music as a core-curricular so every student has access to music.”

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An expanded Medicaid and other rising health care costs will impact Tennessee financially, but how those escalating expenses will shortchange state allocations for higher education concerns U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn.

“What we learned from TennCare is that every dollar went to health care, and higher education lost out,” Blackburn said during a visit April 2nd at Austin Peay State University. “We are incredibly concerned about what health care on a federal level is going to do to states and colleges and universities.”
