Clarksville, TN – The movies for the 2012 season of Movies in the Park have been selected with the first showing, “Hugo”, winner of 5 Oscars, announced via Facebook.
Clarksville Parks & Recreation is encouraging all the movie-goers out there to visit the “Clarksville Movies in the Park” Facebook page every day to guess the titles for this year’s showings. Hints and clues will be provided and the first one to guess correctly receives a free treat!

Customs House Museum Celebrates Women’s History Month

Clarksville, TN – The two-story gallery of the Customs House Museum will be filled with “The Words of Women” next month instead of the usual visual art.
“Each year I create an exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month. This time we are focusing on women writers”, says Terri Jordan, Exhibits Curator. This exhibit will be held March 2nd – May 6th. Participating writers were sent a vintage item to be used as the muse for their work. [Read more]
Indoor Aquatic Center to host “Wettest Egg Hunts”

Clarksville, TN – New this year, the Indoor Aquatic Center, located at 166 Cunningham Lane, has partnered with Sango Pool & Spa and the YMCA to host two not-so-typical egg hunts.
On Saturday, March 31st, thousands of colored eggs will be floating or sunk in the center’s pools, each good for candy and prizes. A hunt will be offered for children ages 1 to 12 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. An adaptive egg hunt will follow, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, for individuals ages 1 to 18 who have a disability. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Where would the journalist, or a democratic society for that matter, be without sunshine laws? Created in the 1970s, the laws require that governments provide public access to meetings and records.
“These tools are necessary for journalists, who often gather public information to write their stories, either by attending open public meetings or by filing open records requests,” Dr. Melony Shemberger, an award-winning journalist and assistant director of communication at Austin Peay State University, said. Austin Peay State University Child Learning Center earns Gold Sneaker Award from Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam

Clarksville, TN – Last year, Connie Sanders, director of the Austin Peay State University Child Learning Center, became concerned about the preschool-aged children under her care. Many of them brought sack lunches with junk food and sugary treats, and she knew they weren’t getting enough exercise at home.
Obesity and diabetes loomed in their future, so Sanders and her staff decided to do something before it was too late. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University to hear ancient Chinese Sounds by the Orchid Ensemble on March 1st

Clarksville, TN – The erhu, a two-stringed instrument somewhat like a violin, appeared in China more than a thousand years ago. The zheng, a plucked half-tube wood zither, dates even farther back to 2,500 years ago, and the marimba, a wooden keyboard, evolved from early African instruments.
If you put the three instruments together, as Canada’s renowned Orchid Ensemble does, they produce a soothing, ancient sound that is unfamiliar to most modern audiences. At 2:30pm on March 1st, the ensemble will bring their unique, Chinese and Chinese-blended music to the Austin Peay State University Music/Mass Communication Building’s Concert Hall for a free concert. Comedy on the Cumberland recognized by Banking Magazine

Clarksville, TN – The Tennessee Banker magazine has recognized the community efforts of F&M Bank for it’s support of Clarksville’s popular “Comedy on the Cumberland” franchise. The stand-up comedy show that raises money for various local charities in Clarksville has been hugely successful in raising awareness of community charities, and generating much need cash for their operations.

Clarksville, TN – The city of Clarksville is deceptively large. Sure, there’s the small town charm of Franklin Street and the local university, but spread over about 95 square miles, more than 130,000 people call the city home. For a couple of faculty members in the Austin Peay State University music department, that makes Clarksville large enough to need certain cosmopolitan attractions.
