AP-STEM Center at APSU host of teacher workshop

Clarksville, TN – Elementary and middle school teachers from Dickson, Cheatham, Humphreys, Montgomery, Robertson and Stewart counties are participating in STEM workshops at the AP-STEM Center at Austin Peay State University.
One set of workshops was from May 31st-June 9th, and the second session is under way until June 23rd. [Read more]
Two APSU alumni inducted into Academic Hall of Fame

Clarksville, TN – Two Austin Peay State University alumni recently were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 191 Academic Hall of Fame.
Ben Kimbrough (’51) and Fred Landiss (’69, ’70) were inducted during the APSU chapter’s initiation ceremony. As part of a permanent tribute, their names will be displayed on a plaque housed in the Woodward Library on the main campus.
The APSU PKP chapter established the Academic Hall of Fame in 1997. While it is not necessary for a nominee to hold membership in PKP, the nominee must be an alumnus of APSU who, since graduating, has demonstrated through his or her life the beliefs of The Society. [Read more]
Stompfest For Christ

Clarksville, TN – Remnant of Faith is hosting their 10th annual Stomp-fest for Christ! Stomp Fest weekend is June 17th and 18th. Friday June 17th is “Holy Hip Hop Night. Several artists from Nashville, Clarksville, and Hopkinsville will perform some of their popular contemporary Gospel songs. J-Rad, an upcoming signed artist, will be featured.
Other artists include Polo, Divine Purpose, John Keith, G’Man, Toney Dabney, Demontrey Ewing, Donte Mishawn, Anthony Whitlock, Antonio French, and Little G. Treva Gordon will be performing her single “Devil U’s a Lie!” These are some talented singers and lyricists and some of the songs are rising up the Gospel charts. [Read more]
AAU Basketball Tournament Volunteers Needed

Clarksville, TN – Volunteers are needed for the 2011 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) 7th Grade Girls’ Basketball National Championship, hosted by the Clarksville-Montgomery County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which will be held from Sunday, July 10th to Friday, July 15th.
This year, the tournaments will take place during the week at 12 different venues throughout the community. Volunteers are needed on Sunday during the day for registration and at 6:00pm to help line up athletes and work the opening ceremony. Responsibilities during the week-long tournaments will include checking player passes, selling tickets and programs and taking tickets. Volunteers will be needed from 7:30am to 8:30pm, Monday through Friday. [Read more]
Former APSU Graduate Student Discovers New Turtle Species

Clarksville, TN – There was something strange about the turtle, aside from its enormous head. Normally, the other species in the broad-headed group of map turtles confined themselves to a single major river system, but Austin Peay State University alum Josh Ennen (’05) knew this particular turtle was listed as living in two separate rivers.
“That was interesting, so I started looking at the genetics of the species,” he said. He compared populations of Graptemys gibbonsi (Pascagoula map turtle) from the Pascagoula and Pearl rivers.

APSU Brings Steampunk to Campus with Summer Art Class

Clarksville, TN – Several years ago, a group of science fiction and fantasy writers began developing odd visions of the future and alternate realities that looked suspiciously similar to 19th century England. Fascinated by the style of the Victorian era, these writers depicted strange, steam-powered machines in their works, thus giving rise to the “Steampunk” movement.
“It’s a bit of ‘what if we’d gone in a different direction,’ and then being wildly inventive from there,” Mike Mitchell, a local artist and Austin Peay State University adjunct art professor, said. [Read more]
John Anderson to Perform at the City of Clarksville’s Independence Day Celebration

Clarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville and Aetna Insurance are celebrating our nation’s independence this year with the fourth annual Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, July 3rd, at McGregor Park. APSU names new director of community/business relations

Clarksville, TN – The executive assistant to the president at Austin Peay State University has been named director of APSU Community and Business Relations.
Carol Clark began her new duties June 1st, adding the responsibilities of director to her current position as executive assistant to the president.
As director, Clark will serve as a principal liaison between the University and business and community contacts in Clarksville-Montgomery County and middle Tennessee generally.

APSU, Vol State to celebrate opening of Highland Crest

Clarksville, TN – This fall, both Austin Peay State University and Volunteer State Community College will offer classes and degree programs at the new Highland Crest Campus in Springfield.
To get new students started, the two schools will hold an Open House Celebration and College Day from 11:00am-7:00pm, Wednesday, June 22nd. A ribbon cutting ceremony, sponsored by the Robertson County Chamber of Commerce, will be held at noon. Lunch and bluegrass music will be provided for future students, guests and the public. Suzuki Violin Lessons Prove Popular at APSU’s Community Arts Program

Clarksville, TN – During the last year, some of Clarksville’s youngest citizens – 3- to 5-year-olds – have picked up violins and are learning to play them competently.
“I am really impressed by them,” JoAnn McIntosh, coordinator for the Community School of the Arts at Austin Peay State University, said. “They are all playing in tune. We have a fabulous new teacher, and we’d really like to expand this program.”
Last fall, Robin Eckert, a Nashville musician who studied violin performance at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, joined the CSA staff, bringing Suzuki violin instruction to the Clarksville-area. [Read more]
