APSU presents special ‘Landscape in Art and Music’ on March 28th
March 21, 2011
Clarksville, TN – For centuries, artists and musicians have found inspiration in landscapes. Maybe it’s the serenity of a sunset over a wooded hill or the danger implied by looming dark mountains that speaks to them on a visceral level. Whatever the cause, creative giants such as the artist Pablo Picasso and the composer Robert Schumann have evoked the earth’s vast and unfathomable settings for some of their greatest works.
On March 28th, Austin Peay State University will host a special program, “Landscape in Art and Music: Small Art Works on Paper with Music for Small Ensembles,” that will fuse together these two art forms. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6:00pm with a gallery viewing and a concert to follow at 7:30pm in the Music/Mass Communication Building. [Read more]

Historian and author to talk about memory in regards to Civil War
March 12, 2011
Clarksville, TN – The sesquicentennial of the Civil War begins this year, and while there’s no shortage of books or movies about that subject, the question remains, “what do we really know of that bloody time in our nation’s history?”
Sure, there are first-hand accounts from the battles and newspaper articles printed at the time, but what about the stories told by survivors years after they returned home from the war.
The Israeli therapist Ori Sivan remarked in the movie “Waltz with Bashir” that “Memory is dynamic, it’s alive,” and that’s part of the problem when it comes to looking at the information passed down from one generation to the next. [Read more]

“He was convinced the audience would not be able to grasp it on first hearing it, so he had it played twice,” Dr. Gregory Wolynec, associate professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. “This last work of his, people who specialize in the music of this composer refer to it as the hardest to understand.”
