APSU Provost Lecture Series to focus on volcanic eruption

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University geologist whose expertise in volcanoes is well established in the field will share a three-dimensional analysis of the 1999 eruption of the Shishaldin Volcano in Alaska as part of the next Provost Lecture Series at APSU.
Dr. Lindsay Szramek, assistant professor of geosciences, will present “Three-Dimensional Analysis of Mafic Pumice from the 1999 sub-Plinian eruption of Shishaldin Volcano, Alaska” at 3:00pm, Thursday, November 8th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. APSU Downtown Gallery presents exhibit of new media works by Brian Cantrell

Clarksville, TN – Artist and Austin Peay State University graduate Brian Cantrell is bringing his innovative mediation on the heavens and the different dimensions of existence to Clarksville this November with a new exhibition, “Spiritvs Ex Machina,” at the APSU Downtown Gallery.
The show, featuring recent new media works by Cantrell is running now through November 28th.

APSU Provost Lecture Series to feature interpretations of ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Clarksville, TN – For historians, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is a fairy tale that is much more than a children’s story. In fact, the tale carries varied perspectives of American culture and society at the turn of the century.
In 1964, Henry M. Littlefield argued that the “Wizard of Oz” was a populist parable where the Cowardly Lion represents William Jennings Bryan, The Tin Man symbolizes an industrialized worker, and the Scarecrow stands for the populist farmer. [Read more]

Christopher Burawa, with Cynthia Hogue from Arizona State University and Clyde Moneyhun from Boise State University, presented a panel, “Translating Living Writers,” at the 2012 American Literary Translators Association annual conference held October 6th at the University of Rochester. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Video production about the comprehensive Dorothy Dix Collection at Austin Peay State University will be the next project presented at the Provost Lecture Series.
Kathy Heuston, associate professor of communication at APSU, and Inga Filippo, professor and instructional librarian at APSU, will share the video Heuston and her students created at 3:00pm, Thursday, October 18th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Clarksville, TN – Incorporating service learning into the college curriculum is a growing instructional tool, one that will be explored further at the next Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.

APSU music professor Gail Robinson-Oturu to perform in Hopkinsville on Saturday

Clarksville, TN – Acclaimed soprano and Austin Peay State University professor of music Gail Robinson-Oturu will join composer and pianist Roland Carter at 7:30pm on September 29th for a special concert, “Music of the Heart,” at the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville, KY.

Dr. Tatsushi Hirono, assistant professor of social work, will present “The Role of Religious Leaders in Natural Disaster Relief: A Comparative Analysis Between the Clergy of American Christian Churches and Japanese Buddhist Temples” at 3:00pm, Thursday, September 20th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

Austin Peay State University Faculty Members recognized for their years of service

Clarksville, TN – Many faculty at Austin Peay State University were recognized Wednesday, August 22nd for their years of service to the University.
Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy, has been a fixture on the APSU faculty for 40 years, joining APSU when there was a separate department of philosophy.
He received the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association’s Distinguished Professor Award.
