APSU Provost Lecture Series: Psychology professor to present session this week

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University psychology professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Dr. Stephen Truhon, professor of psychology, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 4th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The title of his presentation is “Operational Stress Control in the U.S. Navy.”

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University recently announced a number of publications, conferences and credentials as part of their professional and scholarly activities.

Dr. Larry Hoehn, professor emeritus in mathematics, learned recently that two manuscripts he co-authored were accepted for publication. “A 5-Circle Incidence Theorem” was accepted for the Mathematics Magazine published by the Mathematical Association of America. “Zwei Kreistheoreme für affin–metrische Ebenen” was accepted for publication in German in the Mitteilungen der Mathematischen Gesellschaft publication. Young Women’s Leadership Symposium to be held at Austin Peay State University April 5th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University faculty member will lead the third annual Young Women’s Leadership Symposium on April 5th.

Dr. Marsha Lyle-Gonga, assistant professor of political science, will conduct the symposium, which has an anticipated enrollment of 100 women, from 8:30am-4:30pm, April 5th in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. The one-day seminar is designed to increase the political efficacy of women ages 16-24 through leadership development and civic engagement activities. [Read more]

Gateway Chamber Orchestra earning high marks for second album

Gateway Chamber OrchestraClarksville, TN – Last spring, Clarksville’s Gateway Chamber Orchestra quietly released its second album, “Chamber Symphonies,” featuring works by Romanian composer George Enescu and Austrian composers Franz Schreker and Arnold Schoenberg.

The group, made up of Austin Peay State University music faculty and other professional musicians, then took some time off for the summer break. When they returned to Clarksville last fall, the orchestra quickly set to work on one of its most ambitious seasons yet.

APSU Students conduct research on different GPS devices accuracy for field purposes

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Late last year, a group of Austin Peay State University geosciences students hiked through the woods in rural North Carolina, conducting field research.

They were looking for unusual rock outcroppings, and after each discovery, the students painstakingly scribbled down the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of the rocks into their notebooks.

That is, except for APSU student Maurice Testa. He simply pulled out his smart phone and quickly went to work.

APSU makes impression at Tennessee Academy of Science’s Centennial Meeting

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Earlier this month, a group of Austin Peay State University students and faculty members traveled to Vanderbilt University and made an impressive showing at the Tennessee Academy of Science’s Centennial Meeting.

During that meeting, which celebrated the 100th gathering of the state’s top scientific and mathematical minds, several members of the APSU community were recognized for their outstanding work. In the math and computer science competition of the meeting, chaired by APSU associate professor of mathematics Dr. Ben Ntatin, APSU students placed first and second in oral presentations of their research. Scientific jargon and technical terms often bog down interviews and simple conversations, occasionally leaving people more confused than when they started listening to these individuals.

On November 7th, a group of Austin Peay State University faculty members and students traveled to Knoxville for a National Science Foundation workshop that addressed this exact problem. [Read more]
