Two APSU Professors to Present at Annual Clarksville Writers Conference
Two members of the Austin Peay State University community will be featured presenters at this year’s Sixth Annual Clarksville Writers Conference, to be held July 28th-31st on the University campus.
Dr. Blas Falconer, associate professor of English, and Dr. Howard Winn, professor emeritus of history, will speak with attendees, offering encouragement and insights into the field of writing. [Read more]
FOREVER PLAID Resurrects the Magic of The Fifties
Begins June 11th at the Roxy Regional Theatre
Audiences will be humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s when the Roxy Regional Theatre opens the hit musical FOREVER PLAID on Friday, June 11th, at 8:00pm.
This deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers — Gregory Pember as Frankie, John Moser as Smudge, Christopher Cavallo as Sparky and Ryan Bowie as Jinx — killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. National Safety Council Offers Free Teen Driving Safety Guide During National Safety Month
ITASCA, IL — The National Safety Council today announced it is offering a free download of its Teen Driver: A Family Guide to Teen Driver Safety throughout June to celebrate National Safety Month, an annual observance to increase education about the top causes of preventable injuries and deaths in June. Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens. An estimated 6,428 fatalities involved young drivers in 2008. For teens, the likelihood of being in a crash is at a lifetime high in the first 12 months and 1,000 miles of driving. [Read more]
APSU faculty recognized for their efforts
Two faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University demonstrated recent professional and scholarly service.
Dr. Linda Davis, associate professor of literature, had a review of Chanda Casmir’s “Teaching and Learning of English in Secondary Schools: A Zambian Case Study in Improving Quality” published in the Summer 2010 edition of The Modern Language Journal. She also has been invited to review “Content and Language Integrated Learning: Evidence from Research in Europe” edited by Yolanda Ruiz de Zarobe and Rosa Maria Jimenez Catalan for possible publication next summer.
Dr. Brian L. Johnson, assistant vice president of academic affairs, served as commencement speaker May 8th at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, S.C., and as honors and awards convocation speaker April 7th at Paine College in Augusta, GA.

NEW YORK, NY — In honor of 50 years of Dr. Seuss’s One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish entertaining children around the world, Random House Children’s Books, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, The Ocean Project, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) are partnering to celebrate World Oceans Day, held annually on June 8th. Seventy-five AZA accredited zoos and aquariums across the country, and more than 600 Ocean Project partners worldwide will host fun-filled family events inspired by One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, with the goal of teaching children about our ocean’s great diversity of life and the important things we can all do to protect our shared world ocean. Dr. Jones is currently has the longest running TV show on cable TV for more than three decades…‘The Bobby Jones Gospel Show.’ We will also celebrate and recognize Clarksville’s diverse leadership by honoring several local pastors and non-profit organizations in our community.

APSU sports broadcasting program receives nomination for CSMA
A video produced by a handful of Austin Peay State University sports broadcasting students for Lady Governors basketball has been nominated for a 2010 College Sports Media Award.
The College Sports Media Awards (CSMA) is a competition recognizing excellence in video production at all levels of college sports and is sponsored the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Sports Video Group (SVG). Out of more than 130 entries in three categories, the nominees represent outstanding college sports video productions from campuses across the country as well as commercial college sports videos produced by major television networks and advertising agencies. Roxy Founders to be Featured Guests at June Spring Salon Event
In fall of 1983, Clarksville’s arts community received a major boost when Tom Thayer and John McDonald converted an old, downtown movie house into the Roxy Regional Theatre. The historic building on Franklin Street, with its famed neon sign, soon became a cultural hub for the area.
Twenty-seven years and more than 200 productions later, the theater is still thriving. At 7:30pm on June 10th, the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts will host a special Spring Salon event at the Roxy, featuring an evening with both McDonald and Thayer.

June Is Dairy Month Serves as a Healthy Eating Reminder for Moms and Kids
SACRAMENTO, CA — During June Is Dairy Month, Dairy Council of California reminds moms that milk provides the nutrition kids need when they’re out of school and not benefiting from the essential nutrients found in school breakfast and lunch programs.
By design, school lunches provide one-third of the recommended daily allowances of protein, vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and calories that kids need for healthy development. However, only a fraction of children have access to food programs over summer vacation. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service agency, of the 18.5 million children who received free or reduced-price breakfast or lunch during the 2008 school year, only 3.5 million children had access to summer food programs.
