Clarksville Parks and Recreation wins Award for Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center

Tennessee Recreation and Parks AssociationFranklin, TN – The Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) announces the recipients of the association’s 2011 Awards Program. The outstanding achievements of these individuals, communities and organizations were acknowledged during the association’s 60th Annual Conference at Paris Landing State Park on October 5th, 2011.

The Distinguished Young Professional Award was presented to Jennifer Rich Gentry of Morristown for her outstanding service to the Parks and Recreation profession and her community. Gentry is a Programmer for Morristown Parks and Recreation and coordinates a variety of Morristown’s events and programs including Scare Crows in the Park, Olympic Day, Christmas in the City, PATH (Parks Add to Health) fitness program, and Celebration of Cultures Festival.

2011 Clarksville-Montgomery County Veterans Day Parade

Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville-Montgomery County Veterans Day Parade will take place on Saturday, November 5th, with pre-parade ceremonies set for 9:00am at 1 Public Square in downtown Clarksville. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Hubert G. Smith, who served 35 years on active duty, with remarks by County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and City Mayor Kim McMillan.

This year’s parade theme is “Saluting Special Forces and Wounded Warrior Veterans.” [Read more]

New study abroad courses to take APSU students to London for a week

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Daniel Shea, Austin Peay State University associate professor of languages and literature, leaned back in his chair and said, “We’ve got lots of programs for people who can spend considerable amounts of time abroad. If you want to study abroad for a year or a semester or a month, we’ve got you covered.”

Outside his office window in Harned Hall, dozens of nontraditional students walked across campus. They’re the type of students – parents, full-time employees and military veterans – who don’t necessarily have the time or money to spend weeks studying in a foreign country. [Read more]

APSU’s Dickson site offering new courses in health care

Two new minors at APSU allow students to study Web and mobile technologies

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Next fall, Austin Peay State University will begin offering two new academic programs that will prepare students to enter a world dominated by the Internet and mobile technology.

Last month, the University’s Academic Council approved the APSU Department of Computer Science and Information Technology’s plans to create a new Web technology minor and a mobile software technology minor. The new programs will officially take effect next fall, but students can already start taking courses toward these minors. [Read more]

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Will Hold Kickoff Rally on October 18th at Waterstreet Events Center

Relay for LifeClarksville, TN – On October 18th, 2011 at 6:00pm, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Montgomery County will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather at the Waterstreet Events Center for a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.

The rally will feature speakers from the community who have benefitted from the funds raised at Relay and will honor cancer survivors. This also will be the first opportunity to register a team and select a campsite for the overnight event to be held on May 18th at the activity field adjacent to the Hilldale Baptist Church Family Life Center.
