Volunteer mentors needed for new Clarksville Parks and Recreation Dream Chasers program
Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department is seeking mentors! Volunteer mentors are needed for the upcoming Dream Chasers Group Mentoring Program.
Mentors will be working with at-risk youth, ages 13-17 in a small group atmosphere. APSU history professor David Rands publishes work on Koreans in Japan
Clarksville, TN – Dr. David Rands, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of history and the school’s new East Asia expert, previously spent nine years in Japan where he noticed something unusual about that country’s two major cities – Tokyo and Osaka.
Specifically, he realized the cities attracted two completely different immigrant populations from neighboring Korea. A certain type of Korean preferred Osaka while another type chose to live in Tokyo. When Rands returned to the U.S. to pursue his Ph.D. in history at the University of Southern California, he discovered that no one had really examined these fascinating migratory patterns before.

Montgomery County food drive for Manna Café
Montgomery County – Montgomery County Government recently held a food drive to benefit Manna Café. During the month long drive, over 2,600 pounds of food was collected, as well as a $500.00 cash donation.
Thank you to all of the employees and citizens that donated during this time.

Kenny York accepts a $500.00 check from Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers as part of the County food drive for Manna Café. Besides the cash donation, the county raised over 2,600 pounds of food.

Fiscal cliff may derail Market momentum gathered in November
Clarksville, TN – Even though the market indexes showed little change in November, the end of 2012 looks promising as the U.S. economy rebounded despite a highly contentious election cycle and the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy thanks to some encouraging numbers from key indicators.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a post-election trough and ended the month north of 13,000, but still flat compared to the end of October. The NASDAQ mirrored the DJIA, bottoming at 2,837 on November 15th to close at a near month-high at 3,010. APSU Student Newspaper The All State celebrates National Award, Best in Show distinction

Clarksville, TN – For the first time in the 80-plus-year history of The All State, the student newspaper of Austin Peay State University, a staff member was named among the best nationally at the annual Associated Collegiate Press conference held recently in Chicago.
Christy Walker, editorial cartoonist for The All State, was given a second-place individual award for her cartoon depicting Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan with religious items that accompanied an editorial about her private meetings with local religious officials. «Read the rest of this article»
Retired Army Photographer Featured at Planters Bank-Hilldale Gallery
Clarksville, TN – Retired U.S. Army Still Photographer David Smith is the featured artist at the Planters Bank-Hilldale Gallery in December. Smith’s work will be exhibited Thursday, December 6th – Wednesday, January 2nd.
The exhibit is a collection of photography from Smith’s adventures in Tennessee’s state parks, along with many scenes and landscapes from here in Clarksville.

APSU Students conduct research on different GPS devices accuracy for field purposes

Clarksville, TN – Late last year, a group of Austin Peay State University geosciences students hiked through the woods in rural North Carolina, conducting field research.
They were looking for unusual rock outcroppings, and after each discovery, the students painstakingly scribbled down the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of the rocks into their notebooks.
That is, except for APSU student Maurice Testa. He simply pulled out his smart phone and quickly went to work.
