American Flag Collection on View at the Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – The Crouch, Bruner, and Orgain Galleries of the Customs House Museum are themed in a celebration of Old Glory through February in the exhibit Of Stars & Stripes.

An extensive private collection of American flags, political banners, and memorabilia tell a visual story of our states.

Included in the exhibit is a 34 Star Parade Flag made of silk. This flag was reportedly flown at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 19th, 1863.

Also in the show is a 13 Star/13 Stripe Flag circa 1861 – 1876. It is an example of the first flag of the United States, authorized by the Second Continental Congress on June 14 (now Flag Day) 1777.

Museum visitors will also see printed samples of the Flag Acts and a wonderful English Textile (circa 1783) with an all-over pattern showing Liberty seated on an altar.

She is pictured holding a medallion of Washington being crowned with a laurel wreath by a flying Victory, with legend “America Presenting at the Altar of Liberty Medallions of her Illustrious Sons”. Collector John Olson will be conducting a gallery talk of his flag collection in February, date to be determined.

In addition to Of Stars & Stripes, the museum is showcasing quilts from their collection in the lobby gallery and artist Noriko Registrar in the Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery through the end of January.

About the Customs House Museum

Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State’s second largest general museum. The original portion of the building was constructed in 1898 as a U.S. Post Office and Customs House for the flourishing tobacco trade. Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
