Come see a special program on Dragonflies at Dunbar Cave

Clarksville, TN – Have you ever seen a Shadow Darner, Black Saddlebags, or Halloween Pennant at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area? You probably have, even if you didn’t know what it was. These are some of the Dragonflies that can be found at Dunbar Cave.

Dragonfly watching, like birdwatching, has become very popular with those interested in the natural world. Dragonflies can be seen just about anywhere, and are active even on the hottest days.

Of the approximately 154 species of Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) in Tennessee, 28 have been documented at Dunbar Cave. In addition to those listed earlier, they include the Slaty Skimmer, Widow Skimmer and Blue-faced Meadowhawk, as well as the damselflies known as Ebony Jewelwing, Smoky Rubyspot, Blue-tipped Dancer and Orange Bluet, and range from emerald green to electric blue, black and orange, and other gasp-inducing colors and patterns when you really pay attention to them.

If you would like to see these beautiful creatures and learn about them, make plans to attend a special program at Dunbar on Saturday, July 23rd, from 9:30am to 11:30am.
