Markov named 2011 Hawkins Award Winner at APSU
Clarksville, TN – Dr. Sergei Markov, associate professor of biology, was named the recipient of Austin Peay State University’s prestigious Richard M. Hawkins Award during a ceremony on April 26th. The award is presented every spring in recognition of exceptional scholarly and creative work produced by a faculty member.
Markov has earned an international reputation in recent years for his groundbreaking biofuel research. Aside from being published in more than 70 research publications, he has been profiled by media outlets across the globe, and just last month, the industry trade publication Biodiesel Magazine wrote a feature on the work he is doing at Austin Peay. Josh Jerles signs with Rhodes College
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school, is pleased to announce the signing of Josh Jerles to Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Josh has been a student at CA for 13 years and a member of football team since Intermediate School. He is an asset both on and off the field.

Five APSU Professors Honored with Annual Socrates Award
Clarksville, TN – Five Austin Peay State University professors have been singled out by their students and peers as exceptional teachers this year, earning them one of the University’s top distinctions for tenure-track faculty members.
Michelle Rogers, biology instructor, Christina Chester-Fangman, assistant professor of library administration, Dr. Benita Bruster, assistant professor of teaching and learning, Dr. David Nelson, assistant professor of history, and Dr.Mercy Cannon, assistant professor of English, were named this year’s Socrates Award winners, an honor bestowed by APSU annually to teachers who have excelled in motivating and inspiring their students. 17th annual Governors Bass Tournament is just two weeks away
Clarksville, TN – The 17th annual Austin Peay State University Governors Bass Tournament is just two weeks away.
This year’s version will be held Saturday, May 14th, at Kentucky Lake, with registration and boat launching from Paris Landing, Tennessee, State Park. Last season’s tourney was postponed from May 8th to May 23rd, due to flood conditions that surrounded the area. Despite the two-week delay, the tourney still drew 269 boats.
Despite recent heavy rains, this year’s tourney looks promising. APSU again is hopeful of approaching the 300-boat total—the record of 333 was set in 2009.
Travis Russell signs Basketball Scholarship with Bethel University
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school, is pleased to announce the signing of Travis Russell to Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. Travis has played basketball at CA for the past 2 years and was a part of the 2010 Class 10A Basketball team.
Travis not only received a partial basketball scholarship, but also received an academic scholarship. Head of Schools Kay Drew, “Travis’ success on the court is what put him on Bethel’s list of prospects, but his success in the classroom is what helped him secure a full scholarship. We couldn’t be more proud of Travis and his success.” Travis will report to Bethel in August and take on the new role of Wildcat.
Clarksville Senior Olympics start May 4th

Clarksville, TN –Senior adults ages 50 and up can register now until May 2nd for the 2011 Clarksville Senior Olympics. This year’s events will be May 4th-7th at various locations around Clarksville, including The Swan Lake Sports Complex and Golf Course, Kleeman Community Center, The Pinnacle Bowling Center, and Burt-Cobb Community Center.
Seniors will face off for bragging rights, as well as medals in more than 20 challenging events, which include shuffleboard, tennis, track, golf, bowling, basketball free throw, pickle ball and billiards. Because we now have the Indoor Aquatic Center, swimming events have been added. [Read more]
APSU awards 2 top student honors at annual Honors and Awards Day ceremony
Clarksville, TN – A mathematics and physics major who will pursue her doctoral degree at Stanford University on a full scholarship and a history student who has become a mentor for transfer and nontraditional students received the two top student awards during Austin Peay State University’s annual Academic Honors and Awards Day ceremony.
Casey McKnight was named the recipient of the William McClure Drane Award, and Deanna B. Carter received the Harvill-Civitan Citizenship Award. [Read more]
City officials are looking at options for subdivision drainage
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan met Thursday afternoon with Clarksville Street Department officials about drainage issues in Woodstock Subdivision.
After inspecting the situation at the subdivision Wednesday afternoon, Street Department staff members on Thursday explained the drainage issues there, as well as the complex history of the subdivision’s development. [Read more]
Clarksville Academy announces New Head of Upper School
Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12th grade private college preparatory school, is pleased to announce the addition of Mike Marciano has Head of Upper School. Head of Schools, Kay Drew announced Thursday, that Coach Marciano would be joining the Cougar family in a full time position. CSA Hosts End-of-Semester Performances and Exhibits
Clarksville, TN – A full semester of public art and music lessons is coming to a close at Austin Peay State University with a series of exhibits and concerts hosted by The Community School of the Arts at APSU.
For the last two decades, area adults and children have honed their creative talents and discovered new passions through the CSA. The program serves approximately 350 students of all ages and skill levels through programs in music, dance and the visual arts. The CSA was founded in 1990 with the goal of promoting and increasing awareness of the arts throughout the surrounding area. [Read more]
