October 1, 2010 | Print This Post

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemClarksville, TN – The twice national varsity cheerleading champions from Montgomery Central High School plan to give younger students some reading skills to shout about.

The cleverly titled ‘CheeReader’ program will launch next week with MCHS’s 12 varsity and nine junior varsity cheerleaders spending time with beginning readers at Montgomery Central Elementary School. The girls will read one to two books to the students they are paired with, ask the younger students questions concerning the book’s plot and help reinforce the the standards teachers are working on.

The program begins on Monday, October 4th at 2:45pm. And will continue twice a month throughout the school year with students in pre-kindergarten through third grades.

MCHS Cheerleading Coach Kim Herndon noted that the program builds school spirit from the elementary level to the high or middle school level. “Elementary students are excited to have an older school cheerleader spend time with them,” she added.

The varsity girls are twice National, Regional and State Champions. They will wear some kind of cheer wear and bring their poms each time.

“We have really been trying to promote community service with the girls as our community is so supportive of us. We want to give back as much as possible. We have already done several activities. We have a great community!” Herndon said.
