Colleagues and former students looking to honor APSU pioneer Betty Joe Wallace

Clarksville, TN – The late Betty Joe Wallace taught history at Austin Peay State University for almost 40 years, and many of her former students and colleagues praise her as a pioneer who helped create a more progressive campus.
“She was the first cigar-smoking feminist I ever met,” Dr. Carlette Hardin, dean of the APSU Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education, said.
Annual Women’s History Month Exhibition at Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – Each year the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center features the art of women in celebration of Women’s History Month. This year, Tennessee women artisans are showcased in the newly renovated Kimbrough Gallery. The exhibit, titled A Woman’s Touch, includes sculpture, jewelry, clothing, furniture, printmaking, and ceramics.
Participating in the exhibit are artists Kim Winkle, Anne Rob, Claudia Lee, Susan DeMay, Jeanie Stephenson, Jennifer Knowles, Virginia Fisher, Jennifer Crescuillo, Vicki Vipperman, Brenda Stein, and Melina Ludwig.
The Bold Color of Elizabeth LaPenna Comes to the Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center welcomes the abstract work of Elizabeth LaPenna to the Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery as part of the institution’s celebration of Women’s History Month.
Elizabeth’s bold paintings are abundant with movement. The vivid color palettes, created through layering processes of pouring, scraping, lifting, and imprinting, pull the viewer into her dreamy, contained environments.

Writers’ Hour Featured during Customs House Museum’s Annual Women’s History Month Exhibition

Clarksville, TN – On March 31st, the Customs House Museum will present a Writers’ Hour event in conjunction with its invitational exhibit celebrating women artists.
Local authors will read from their works that are themed to the museum’s show, In the Garden.
“The museum has held several readings in the past,” states Exhibits Curator Terri Jordan. “It is interesting to hear the variety of poems and stories from our local writers. Often funny, and sometimes sad, the audience is always blown away with the talent we have in the Clarksville area.”

Clarksville, TN – The Bruner Gallery of the Customs House Museum greets visitors with a series of suspended “straight jackets”. Using vintage fabrics, hospital baby blankets, and a wedding dress as the textiles, these jackets date the phases of a woman’s life.
Surrounding walls at first glance appear to display whimsical pieces of children’s clothes and trinkets housed in floating Petri dishes. The playfulness of objects in Family Ties invites you in but the messages expressed are much deeper, if not much darker.
