Austin Peay State University Spring Salon Series to discuss “Faces of Valor” book honoring county’s armed services veterans March 12th

APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative ArtsClarksville, TN – In early 2003, Gerald Gilman, Randy Rubel and a committee undertook a monumental task. They put out a call for veterans and their families in Montgomery County to bring in pictures and service details for a collection to be titled “Faces of Valor.”

Those items are now displayed in the restored Montgomery County Courthouse, and a guidebook was printed, featuring 255 entries of soldiers serving from numerous eras. [Read more]

Crockett Policy Institute to Host Veterans and Jobs Forum at Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Lt Gen John Castellaw, a former Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and the President of the Crockett Policy Institute, will lead a “Jobs and Veterans” forum at Austin Peay State University, Monday, February 27th.

MG James McConville of Fort Campbell will be joined by State Commissioner of Veteran’s Affairs Many-Bears Grinder, former Deputy Commissioner of Workforce Development Bob Henningsen, and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan on the panel. [Read more]

Hands on Clarksville seeks Veteran Homeowners for Free Weatherization Program

Hands On ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – It’s cold outside, but Hands on Clarksville is ready for winter! The local volunteer program recently received a Community Impact grant from the Home Depot Foundation; and the funds will be used to help five local veteran families weatherize their homes.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, drafts in homes are not only annoying but can also be responsible for soaring energy costs in both winter and summer. And, reducing drafts in our homes can lower energy costs from 5 to 30 percent. [Read more]

Hands on Clarksville receives Home Depot Grant for Veteran Weatherization Project

Hands On ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – Hands on Clarksville is pleased to announce it has received a community grant from The Home Depot Foundation to help local veterans and their families with weatherization repairs.

With help from Home Depot’s Team Depot, community volunteers will implement the Hometown Heroes Weatherization Project in late February 2012.

According to the Home Depot Foundation website, Home Depot supports volunteering to improve the physical health of neighborhoods and help creates healthier and more stable environments where families can thrive. [Read more]

Author Michael Freeland to have Book Signing at Starbucks

Starbucks CoffeeClarksville, TN – Author Michael Freeland, author of “Blood River to Berlin” and “Time and The River”, will sign his books this Saturday, December 17th, at 10:00am at the Starbucks on Madison Street in Clarksville TN.

Octogenarian Freeland is a member of the Greatest Generation. He served as a medic during World War II and wrote of his experiences in both books. “Time and The River” features photographs by his wife, Ellen. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University to participate in joint Veterans Day program

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – All U.S. veterans – including those fallen during war, prisoners of war and missing in action – will be honored during a joint Veterans Day ceremony on November 8th at Fort Campbell, KY.

Austin Peay State University is one of several postsecondary institutions participating in the program, which will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, November 8th in the auditorium of the Glenn English Army Education Center. The event is free and open to the public. [Read more]

New study abroad courses to take APSU students to London for a week

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Daniel Shea, Austin Peay State University associate professor of languages and literature, leaned back in his chair and said, “We’ve got lots of programs for people who can spend considerable amounts of time abroad. If you want to study abroad for a year or a semester or a month, we’ve got you covered.”

Outside his office window in Harned Hall, dozens of nontraditional students walked across campus. They’re the type of students – parents, full-time employees and military veterans – who don’t necessarily have the time or money to spend weeks studying in a foreign country. [Read more]

Hamburger Hill Veterans Visit Fort Campbell Kentucky

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division Fort Campbell, KY – Dozens of Vietnam-era, 101st Airborne Division Veterans returned to Fort Campbell, May 12th – 13th, to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.

The 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, “Iron Rakkasans” welcomed the Veterans back to Fort Campbell and will host several events in their honor.

The Veterans, on May 12th, visited to the Sabalauski Air Assault School, where Veterans witnessed a demonstration of 21st Century combat insertion techniques and Air Assault operations.
