Clarksville Writers’ Conference – Children’s Author Tracy Barrett Gives Rules for Publication

June 20, 2012

Clarksville Writer's ConferenceClarksville, TN – Recently resigning from teaching at Vanderbilt University where she taught Italian, Women’s Studies, English and Humanities, Tracy Barrett can now devote her time to creating more children’s and young adult books. Her scholarly interests resulted in her Bachelor’s degree in Classics-Archaeology from Brown University and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. In Medieval Italian Literature from the University of California at Berkeley.

A grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study medieval women writers led to the writing of her award-winning young-adult novel, Anna of Byzantium (Delacorte). Her most recent publications are King of Ithaka, a young-adult novel based on Homer’s Odyssey; and the fourth book in The Sherlock Files, The Missing Heir (both Henry Holt). In September, Harcourt will publisher her young-adult retelling of the myth of the Minotaur, Dark of the Moon.

Robert Penn Warren

Robert Penn Warren

Clarksville, TN – Ask the average college-bound high school student who Robert Penn Warren is and you might hear that the student has no idea that he was a writer.

Most probably the student wouldn’t be able to tell you that Warren was a graduate of Clarksville High School in 1921 or that he was born in Guthrie, Kentucky.

Even fewer would know that he is uniquely the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, one for fiction and two for poetry; no other Pulitzer Prize winner can claim this accolade. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University’s Dr. Blas Falconer edits anthology on “other” Latino experiences

January 4, 2012

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Blas Falconer, a poet and Austin Peay State University professor of English, grew up in northern Virginia, the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Caucasian father of German-Scottish descent. Occasionally, in an effort to reconnect with his mother’s heritage, he’d flip through books of verse by the Puerto Rican poets who populated New York City’s Spanish Harlem neighborhood. But when he read this poetry, he felt disconnected from his heritage.

“My identity was shaped by my Latino background, and yet I struggled to identify with a lot of Latino literature being published,” he said. “A lot of it came from these centers of Latino communities – the Puerto Rican community in New York or the Cuban-American community in Miami or the Mexican-American, the Chicano community, in the American Southwest. And so, a lot of the writing that came out of there addressed community concerns.” [Read more]

APSU biology professor awarded state contract to study endangered plants

October 1, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Braun’s rock-cress is a strange-looking little plant with star-shaped hairs covering its stems and leaves. It grows almost exclusively in the shade, usually around rock outcroppings in forests, and if you were to happen upon it, you might mistake it for a weed.

The odds of you finding a Braun’s rock-cress, however, are extremely rare. The peculiar plant is only found in two areas of the world, and in the mid-1990s, it was listed as a federally endangered species. Earlier this year, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation awarded APSU professor of biology Dr. Carol Baskauf a $10,000 contract to study the population genetics of the plant species, and her research may provide valuable information aiding efforts to protect this plant.
