Austin Peay State University History Department helps remember War of 1812 at local conference

Clarksville, TN – In terms of notoriety, the War of 1812 isn’t nearly as popular with the general public as, say, the American Revolution or the Civil War.
But the conflict did have a pivotal impact on the United States, giving us the national anthem, Gen. Andrew Jackson and even Tennessee’s nickname as the “Volunteer State.”
Dr. Kristofer Ray, APSU assistant professor of history, Deanna Carter, APSU graduate student, and Dr. Donald Hickey, Wayne State College professor of history, meet at the Tennessee, the Atlantic World and the War of 1812 symposium in Nashville.
Renowned soprano Burrows to perform at APSU on October 30th

Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Arts and Heritage Development Council, in cooperation with the Clarksville Community Concert Association and Austin Peay State University Department of Music, will present renowned soprano and Clarksville native Melissa Shippen Burrows in concert at 7:00pm, October 30th, in the APSU Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall.
Described by The New York Times as “a dramatic soprano with an attractive, powerful sound,” as “angelic” by The Washington Post and, according to Theater Scene, “appealing and lyrical,” Burrows has made debuts in her young career throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

APSU’s Bryant explores “presence and absence” at new photography exhibit

Clarksville, TN – The image is hauntingly beautiful. Two old, weathered lawn chairs sit unused in a backyard. The black-and-white photograph speaks to the temporal nature of life, while also suggesting how photographer Susan Bryant, an Austin Peay State University professor of art, views the world.
“I’m drawn to subjects that are beautiful and that lend themselves to metaphor: the grace of a particular hand gesture, a lock of braided hair, a stack of suitcases,” she said.

Markets Tumble on Signs of Weakening Global, U.S. Economies

Clarksville, TN – Stocks fell sharply yesterday around the world, accelerating a widespread decline that began as the United States approached the August 2 deadline for averting default and then resumed with even more intensity after a brief rally when a debt/budget deal was reached in Washington.
On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 512.76, or 4.31%, while the broader S&P 500 dropped 60.27, or 4.78%, and the tech-oriented Nasdaq declined 136.68, or 5.67%. [Read more]
APSU Professor’s New Book Examines Women’s Suffrage Movement in Argentina

Clarksville, TN – In 1947, women in Argentina were finally given the right to vote. Jubilant crowds took to the streets, and the country’s first lady, Eva (Evita) Perón was hailed as a hero for her role in spearheading the new law.
But Dr. Gregory Hammond, assistant professor of history at Austin Peay State University, points out that not all women were happy by this historic turn of events. In his new book, “The Women’s Suffrage Movement and Feminism in Argentina from Roca to Perón,” he argues that some of that country’s most ardent feminists were against the Perón government enacting the new law.
“Here’s the great irony,” Hammond said. “The early generation of feminists, the ones who had worked for four decades in some cases, were all opponents of (President Juan) Perón. They thought he was basically a Fascist. Peron had said things in the past that indicated he supported Mussolini. And they believed if women got the right to vote from Perón, then they would vote for Perón.” [Read more]
Former APSU Graduate Student Discovers New Turtle Species

Clarksville, TN – There was something strange about the turtle, aside from its enormous head. Normally, the other species in the broad-headed group of map turtles confined themselves to a single major river system, but Austin Peay State University alum Josh Ennen (’05) knew this particular turtle was listed as living in two separate rivers.
“That was interesting, so I started looking at the genetics of the species,” he said. He compared populations of Graptemys gibbonsi (Pascagoula map turtle) from the Pascagoula and Pearl rivers.
