Clarksville Office of Housing and Community Development To Hold Ground-breaking at The Vinings at Greencastle October 24th

Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Office of Housing and Community Development in conjunction with The Vantage Group, LLC will hold a ground-breaking ceremony for The Vinings at Greencastle, an 80 unit apartment complex, on October 24th, 2012 at 10:00am.

The Vinings at Green Castle will be an affordable multi-family housing complex that is designed to accommodate residents 55+ years and up. Austin Peay State University Distinguished music alumna Jeanie Darnell to give free concert September 20th

Clarksville, TN – Internationally known soprano and Austin Peay State University alumna Jeanie Darnell is returning to her alma mater at 7:30pm on September 20th for a guest recital in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Concert Hall.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will include the complete Liederkreis, Op. 39 of Robert Schumann, several beautiful, romantic songs of Rachmaninoff and Liszt and a new song cycle by Lori Laitman, one of America’s most performed contemporary composers.

Clarksville, TN – Ten representatives from Clarksville Academy recently attended and/or presented sessions at the iSummit in Atlanta Georgia. iSummit is a conference centered on using Apple or Mac based technology as an integral part of education. National Police Week 2012: Honoring and Remembering our Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

Clarksville, TN – In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 that set aside May 15th as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. This year, National Police Week will run from Sunday, May 13th through Saturday, May 19th.

The law was later amended by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1995, Public Law 103-322 signed by President Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15th each year as a tribute to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Concert at Mag’s Coffee Shop

Clarksville, TN – The band, Unnamed Servant, decided to stop at Mag’s Coffee Shop on Riverside Drive in Clarksville on Friday night as a last minute concert stop as the band makes it’s way to St. Louis and eventually on to the west coast.

The Owners of Mag’s Coffee Stop were contacted by the band early in the week about being the location for the concert and after a flurry of emails back and forth the date was set. Even with the last minute notice a couple dozen people were on hand to enjoy the performance.

Montgomery County Free Driving Program sees Overwhelming Response

Montgomery County, TN – Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for ages 15-19 in the United States.

In an effort to lower this statistic, the Montgomery County Driver Safety Program provided a free Defensive Driving Course, Alive at 25, to approximately 200 Montgomery County high school students during the months of February, March and April. Two additional classes were needed due to the overwhelming response. [Read more]

APSU Service Learning Class helps develop bilingual directory for local Hispanic community

Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University student Jorge Jiménez Cano first arrived in the United States, he only spoke a handful of basic English words, such as “hello” and “yes.” This proved to be a bit problematic on the days when he wasn’t feeling well.

“When I’d go to the doctor, I’d say ‘ouch here,’” he recalled, pointing to his throat to show the doctor where he felt pain. “It was intimidating.” [Read more]

APSU student to help excavate ancient Greek town this summer

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Miraldi, a junior classics major at Austin Peay State University, unfolded a large map and spread it over the desk of Dr. Tim Winters, APSU professor of classics, covering up his coffee mugs and a worn, paperback copy of Euripides’ plays.

“The site is called Gournia,” Miraldi said, leaning over the map and pointing at a small dot on the Greek island of Crete. It didn’t look like much on the crinkled paper, but in actuality Gournia is a stunningly beautiful archeological site, with ancient stone walls surrounded by lush green hills and the deep blue of the Cretan Sea.
