Battle of the Bulge seminar continues in Clarksville, April 7th

Clarksville, TN – On December 16th, 1944, the German Army launched a desperate offensive designed to split the Allied armies in two and capture the strategic supply port of Antwerp, Belgium. This offensive has come to be known as the Battle of the Bulge.
We are now in the midst of the 70th Anniversary of that offensive and historians from the Clarksville area including history faculty from Austin Peay State University will take part in presenting a series of programs that will educate, inform and enlighten the public as to the importance of this offensive. A highlight of one seminar will be actual World War 2 veterans that served in the Bulge fighting.

Clarksville, TN – The economic data were mixed, but generally disappointing, consistent with first quarter GDP growth closer to 0% (growth is widely expected to pick up again in the 2Q15). Consumer confidence improved more than anticipated in March and motor vehicle sales picked up.
However, the ISM manufacturing data suggested a slowdown in the factory sector (likely related to the stronger dollar, although survey respondents continued to note West Coast port delays).

Clarksville, TN – The economic data were mixed, adding little to the overall picture. Durable goods orders disappointed (again), with orders for nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft (a rough proxy for business fixed investment) down for the sixth consecutive month. Unfilled orders are falling and inventories are outpacing shipments – both are bad signs, but neither is yet at a dangerous level.
Home sales figures were mixed. The third estimate of fourth quarter GDP growth came in at 2.2%, the same as in the previous estimate. This report included corporate profit data for 4Q14, which showed a moderate increase in domestic nonfinancial corporate profits, but a sharp drop in profits from abroad.

Montgomery County Public Health Director Joey Smith to speak at APSU

Clarksville, TN – Montgomery County Public Health Director Joey Smith (’99) was recently honored as one of the leaders in his field in the United States, and Austin Peay State University is proud to welcome Smith to campus as he discusses his successes and what he sees in the future of public health.
Smith’s discussion will take place from 11:30am–12:30pm on April 8th in University Center room 305, located on the campus of the University.

Clarksville, TN – As was widely anticipated, the Federal Open Market Committee removed the “patient” language from the policy statement, but indicated that “an increase in the target range for the federal funds rate remains unlikely at the April FOMC meeting.”
The FOMC noted that “economic growth has moderated somewhat” (vs. January’s “expanding at a solid pace”). In its Summary of Economic Projections, Fed officials lowered their forecasts for GDP growth and inflation. The dots in the dot plot (expectations of the appropriate year-end level of the federal funds rate) generally moved lower, implying a lower expected path of short-term interest rates in the months ahead.

Clarksville, TN – Retail sales results for February continued to disappoint and consumer sentiment slipped unexpectedly, but weather may have been a factor. The reports on import prices and producer prices both showed significant disinflationary pressure (which may be seen as delaying the Fed’s initial hike in short-term interest rates). Stock market volatility was elevated, with sharp moves day by day.
Market participants have grown increasingly worried about exchange rates. Around the world, exchange rates mostly fall under the jurisdiction of finance ministers (the Treasury in the U.S.), not the central banks.

Clarksville, TN – Bitten by a spider while shaking out a towel on one sunny afternoon, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of biology Dr. Amy Thompson did the first logical thing after an encounter with an eight-legged pest – she buried her nose in a book.
“At first, I thought it was a bee sting, but then I noticed the spider scurrying off,” Thompson said. “So being an academic, I was like, ‘oh gosh, I have to find out more about this spider.’”

Chicago Artist Sergio Gomez Exhibits at the Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – Chicago-based artist Sergio Gomez brings his bold figurative works to the Customs House Museum with the exhibit The Land In Between.
Exhibited in the two-story Crouch Gallery, the moody, ghost-like forms that anchor Gomez’s large paintings appear restless and calm at the same time, amid dripping colors and spackled landscapes.

APSU hosting Fifth Annual Holiday Dinner December 5th and 6th

Clarksville, TN – On a Saturday evening last December, a thin layer of snow covered downtown Clarksville. An icy, winter wind rattled the decorations hanging from streetlights, and most of the sidewalks were empty because it was too cold to go outside.
One of the only signs of life on that quiet night came from the center of the Austin Peay State University campus, where hundreds of people hurried into the Morgan University Center for the Department of Music’s Annual Holiday Dinner.
