Colleagues and former students looking to honor APSU pioneer Betty Joe Wallace

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – The late Betty Joe Wallace taught history at Austin Peay State University for almost 40 years, and many of her former students and colleagues praise her as a pioneer who helped create a more progressive campus.

“She was the first cigar-smoking feminist I ever met,” Dr. Carlette Hardin, dean of the APSU Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education, said.

Providing hot meals and gifts to low-income families with children.

Flourishing FamiliesClarksville, TN – Flourishing Families will host its 3rd Annual “Christmas in Clarksville” event on Wednesday, December 21st, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Free and open to the public, it will take place in the Foy Fitness Center of Austin Peay State University.
 
The purpose of the event is to provide Christmas gifts and hot meals to low income families with children.

Vietnam Veterans of America held their annual Memorial Day Candlelight Vigil Sunday night, May 24th

Clarksville, TN – On Sunday, May 25th, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 396 held their annual Candlelight Vigil to remember the men and women who were left behind in Vietnam when American forces withdrew in 1975.

It is a solemn occasion when a nation gathers together to honor its soldiers, those who lived to come home, but even more importantly those who did not.

Famed Marine Corps General to speak at APSU Military Alumni Dinner on October 25th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In July 1977, a young Austin Peay State University graduate named Ronald Bailey was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Thirty-four years later, in June 2011, that APSU graduate became the first African American commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, the oldest and largest infantry division in the Marine Corps.

New APSU scholarship to honor legendary basketball coach Ben Fendley

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – For 34 years, if you wanted to play basketball at Clarksville High School, you had to first survive the grueling practices of that school’s legendary coach, Ben Fendley. The U.S. Marine Corps and Korean War veteran knew what his players were capable of achieving, so he made sure they went home exhausted each night.

“You had better be prepared to give him everything you had in practice every day, or there was no place for you on his team,” Wayne Pace, former CHS player and former chief financial officer and executive vice president for Time Warner Inc., said. “Practice was brutal; games were the treat.” [Read more]
