TVA’s Tennessee Valley Electric Lineman Rodeo was alot of Fun

Clarksville, TN – The Tennessee Valley Authority, along with the City of Clarksville, the Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC) and CDE Lightband played host to the Tennessee Valley Electric Lineman Rodeo at McGregor Park in Clarksville, Tennessee from June 7th-9th.

This multi-day event allowed electrical workers from throughout the region compete against one another to see who’s the best of the best 45 feet in the air. When the lights go out, for an electric line worker, duty calls. He puts his life on the line to ensure we are able to enjoy all the conveniences that electricity provides to us.

APSU to graduate record 1,000-plus students May 4th

Austin Peay State University

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will award degrees to 1,075 students – the largest class in APSU history – during its 83rd Spring Commencement on Friday, May 4th in the Dunn Center.

More students are graduating from APSU because of the University’s increased efforts to offer students more opportunities to finish their degrees faster. One of those opportunities is APSU’s new Winter Term, which launched in December 2011. Some of the students will be able to graduate May 4th because they took a course during Winter Term. APSU to award new chemical engineering tech degree to 50-plus candidates

Clarksville, TN – During Spring Commencement on May 6th, Austin Peay State University will graduate the first class of students to receive the new Associate of Applied Science in chemical engineering technology.

A total of 53 students will receive the degree, launched for the first time in Fall 2009. The degree program is housed in the APSU College of Science and Mathematics, which will send off its candidates at 10:00am, Friday, May 6th. [Read more]

TVA Police urge reservoir users to play safely

KNOXVILLE, TN — With the start of the traditional summer recreation season this Memorial Day weekend, Tennessee Valley Authority Police are urging the public to use caution and common sense around the water. In 2009, 27 people drowned in TVA reservoirs.

“Most of the drowning deaths we investigate can be prevented if people simply wear a personal floatation device and avoid using alcohol or drugs around the water,” said Raymond Jordan, TVA Police field operations commander. “It’s a tragedy every time a life is lost, but it’s even worse when many of these accidents didn’t have to happen.”

Two-thirds of all boating accidents and half of all boating fatalities involve alcohol. [Read more]

Republican Caucus presents weekly “wrap”

Each Friday Clarksville Online will publish the House Republican Caucus Weekly Wrap as a service to the community. This week’s topics include:

• Tennessee to receive $3.7 billion in federal money
• Environment and Conservation Committees hear testimony on TVA coal ash spill
• General Assembly website receives makeover, features improved bill tracking

Legislators were updated this week on the estimates from the bailout package passed by Congress and signed by the President earlier this week, learning that Tennessee stands to receive anywhere from $3.7 to $4.3 billion over roughly two years. Most of the money is already allocated by the federal government to specific purposes, with only $171 million left for “general purpose.”

TennCare will receive the largest sum of money, with $1.1 billion allocate specifically for the program. Other health-related programs that will receive money are foster care and adoption assistance services, immunization programs, elderly nutrition programs, and child care, which together total approximately $70 million.
