The Civil War Musical at the Roxy Theater—What a Bargain!

May 11, 2011

Clarksville, TN – Attending the Civil War Musical at Clarksville’s Roxy Theater is the biggest bargain in entertainment in Middle Tennessee! Where else can you see a professionally staged and professionally performed musical for a mere twenty dollars?

“The Civil War: A Sesquicentennial Event” is from a book by Frank Wildhorn, Gregory Boyd and Jack Murphy with music by Frank Wildhorn, and lyrics by Frank Wildhorn, Gregory Boyd and Jack Murphy.

What this musical accomplishes is the revelation that both Union and Confederate soldiers–many of whom literally were brothers–had identical desires and feelings going into war. Each is certain that his cause is just and worth fighting for. Slaves are portrayed suffering intense emotions as husband and wife are separated by forces outside themselves.

The Roxy Regional Theatre recognizes the Civil War Sesquicentennial with the Civil War Musical

April 27, 2011

Clarksville, TN – In recognition of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, the Roxy Regional Theatre is currently staging a production of the Frank Wildhorn and Gregory Boyd musical, The Civil War. This has to be one of the best of the many shows I have seen at the Roxy Regional Theatre.

Drawing on letters, diaries, firsthand accounts, and the words of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman, the musical covers the enormous emotional landscape of the most difficult test our nation has ever endured. The Civil War musical puts a human face on the greatest tragedy of American history and passionately asks us to consider our beliefs about freedom, honor and faith.

Doubt opens at the Roxy Regional Theatre for limited run

March 24, 2011

“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone.”

Clarksville, TN – The Roxy Regional Theatre has started a very limited run of the drama Doubt. The play has received rave reviews and awards during its main stage run, including multiple Tony Awards, several Drama Desk Awards, the Lucille Lortel Award, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the New York Drama Critics Circle Best Play Award, and the Theater World Award. Miramax released a movie version of the play in 2008 featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep.

I went into this having already seen the movie, and can safely say that the Roxy Performance was simply outstanding. I will stack Tom Thayer, Leslie Green, Kendall Anne Thompson, and Adriane Wiley-Hatfield up against Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis any day! The Roxy’s production of DOUBT is directed by John McDonald and features a stellar cast of Roxy veterans.

The Sounds of Ain’t Misbehavin’ has the Roxy Regional Theatre jumpin’ and jivin’

February 27, 2011

Roxy Regional TheatreClarksville, TN – The Roxy Regional Theatre’s revival of the Tony award winning musical Ain’t Misbehavin’ is an explosive romp that takes the audience on a jaunt through the roaring 1920’s, and leading into the great depression. The show is intended as a tribute to African American musicians and follows the birth of an entirely new genre of jazz music known as swing.

Swing can trace its roots to the Harlem renaissance which brought African American Culture to the attention of white society in swanky New York night clubs where musicians like Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Willie “The Lion” Smith entertained the elites of New York’s high society.

The show features the music of Jazz Pianist and songwriter Fats Waller, played flawlessly by Tom Thayer.
