APSU Governors Games to benefit military alumni, student scholarships

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In honor of the military students and their families who help make Austin Peay State University strong, the 2015 APSU Governors Games Powered by CrossFit Clarksville will benefit the APSU Military Alumni Chapter Scholarship Endowment.

All proceeds from the event, which takes place Saturday, August 1st from 8:00am – 7:00pm at Governors Stadium and the Foy Fitness & Recreation Center Pool on the University campus, will fund scholarships to assist those men and women keeping our country safe.

Vietnam Veterans of America held their annual Memorial Day Candlelight Vigil Sunday night, May 24th

Clarksville, TN – On Sunday, May 25th, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 396 held their annual Candlelight Vigil to remember the men and women who were left behind in Vietnam when American forces withdrew in 1975.

It is a solemn occasion when a nation gathers together to honor its soldiers, those who lived to come home, but even more importantly those who did not.

APSU Army ROTC program honored with 2013-14 MacArthur Award

Austin Peay State University - APSUFort Knox, KY – The U.S. Army Cadet Command has announced that Austin Peay State University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) department has won one of eight MacArthur Awards for the school year 2013-2014.

The awards, presented by the U.S. Army Cadet Command and the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation, recognize the ideals of “duty, honor and country,” as advocated by MacArthur.

McCrum, award-winning Southern writer best known for her Appalachian “Ballad” novels, including a number of New York Times bestsellers, will also give the keynote address at Thursday evening’s banquet at Club Level of Austin Peay State University’s newly renovated Governors Stadium, featuring a gorgeous view of this historic campus.

Customs House Museum Announces Award Winners in the Southern Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition

Clarksville's Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum hosted the awards reception for the Southern Watercolor Society’s 38th Annual Juried Exhibition on May 16th. The show features eighty-seven paintings. This year’s juror Kathleen Conover awarded 32 artists cash or merchandise prices.

The Best in Show was awarded to Z.L. Feng for In the Wood. Feng is an artist-signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Pastel Society of America (as master pastelist).

APSU professor’s “lifetime work” published, identifies state plants

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In January 1967, while The Rolling Stones performed on The Ed Sullivan Show and a blizzard dropped 23 inches of snow across Chicago, a young Austin Peay State University botany professor began a project that would take him nearly 50 years to complete.

Dr. Edward Chester, his suit then smelling of chalkboard dust and his dark hair pomaded in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis, sat at his desk that winter to write a comprehensive guide identifying all of Tennessee’s 2,878 vascular plants.
