CMCSS Makes Great Progress

Clarksville-Montgomery County School System - CMCSSNashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Education released district-level results from the 2015 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP), which show strong gains in high school and significant gains in grades 3-8 math.

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – Clarksville-Montgomery County School System earned bragging rights as the Tennessee Department of Education announced student performance on the 2012 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program.

CMCSS has improved in achievement proficiency in all subject areas and grades, with the exception of U.S. History, which remains at an exceptionally high 97 percent proficient. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – On a recent afternoon, Austin Peay State University psychology student Caitlin Nelms was in the library, checking her email, when she noticed a message sitting in her junk mail folder. It had been there a few days.

When she clicked on it, the message informed her that she was the sole recipient of a prestigious summer internship offered through the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Neuroscience’s and Vanderbilt University’s Summer Science Academy.

Clarksville Montgomery County School Board Reviews Report Card Results

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – The Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board reviewed the system’s results on its newly released state report card during its Tuesday work session, seeing improvements across grades, subjects and schools.

Chief Academic Officer Dr. B.J. Worthington reminded School Board members of the changes that Tennessee schools have experienced with more rigorous standards and assessments; redefined proficiency levels; a change in how results are calculated; and a state-legislated mandate that TCAP assessments count as part of students’ math and language arts grades for the second semester. Wishful Thinking for School Children for the Coming Year

School LunchI saw an ad that described a huge giveaway of thousands of dollars for the person who wins and another equal amount for the charity the person chose to write about. It started my thinking about what would be an ideal situation for the children who will soon be starting back to school.

The first thing I would wish for them is that each and every child would have a good breakfast every morning (and adequate food for the entire day, of course!). According to the Child Nutrition Fact Sheet, missing breakfast and experiencing hunger can impair a child’s ability to learn. Quite a number of studies have linked hunger with lessened recall and poor math skills. Regardless of any studies, it just makes common sense that a child who is hungry is not as focused on learning.
