Austin Peay State University to have reading by Poets Nancy Eimers and Karen Skolfield October 3rd

Clarksville, TN – In early 2012, award-winning poet Nancy Eimers read a poetry collection that was tender and serious, but also deeply funny and playful.

“This is a poet who pays attention to small wonders, who marvels that ‘sticks / can walk’ and ‘the roots of trees gather / forgotten rains,’ who takes to heart ‘the river’s stillness behind a fallen log,’ and yearns over human fragility, a child’s hand with its ‘twiggish bones, the little covering of skin,’” Eimers later wrote. “In and around and under the wit these poems are enormously tender.”

Poet Helena Mesa to read from debut collection at APSU on October 11th

Clarksville, TN – In the spring of 2006, Austin Peay State University’s literary journal, Zone 3, published the poem, “Sway This Night,” by Pittsburgh native Helena Mesa. That work is now part of Mesa’s acclaimed new collection, “Horse Dance Underwater,” which former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Collier called a “virtuosic first book” that leaves readers “breathless, exhilarated and transformed.” [Read more]

Famed young adult author Nnedi Okorafor to read at APSU on July 20th

Clarksville, TN – The author Nnedi Okorafor doesn’t write stories that feel tired or predictable. Her books, which mash up literary genres from African literature to science fiction and fantasy, stand out for their originality and their abilities to take young readers on unexpected journeys.

“There’s more vivid imagination in a page of Nnedi Okorafor’s work than in whole volumes of ordinary fantasy epics,” the celebrated author Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in a recent review. [Read more]

APSU employees report various achievements

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University announce their recent professional and scholarly activities.

Dr. Victoria McCarthy and Dr. Robyn Hulsart, both associate professors of professional studies, won best conference paper at the May 2012 conference of The Academic Forum. The title of their paper was “A Crisis Management Plan for Ethical Misconduct and Financial Fraud.” [Read more]

Austin Peay State University fiction writer Kitterman to read from new book on December 7th

Clarksville, TN – Barry Kitterman, an Austin Peay State University creative writing professor, had what might be called a typical, Midwestern upbringing. He grew up in the small town of Ivanhoe, populated by farmers and situated hundreds of miles from anything resembling a large city.

But this Midwestern childhood actually occurred not too far from the Pacific Ocean, in northern California, causing a few people to scratch their heads when Kitterman tells them about his past.

Poetry reading held at Austin Peay State University

Clarksville, TN – On September 15th, at 4:00pm, two Award-winning Poets gave a poetry reading at the APSU’s Gentry Auditorium in the Kimbrough Building.

American Book Award-winning author and poet Rigoberto González, visited APSU to read his work. Afterwards, he introduced Amanda Auchter who read from her prize-winning collection. Her book, “The Glass Crib,” won the 2010 Zone 3 First Book Award for Poetry, an annual contest hosted by Austin Peay State University’s literary journal and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.

Two Award-winning Poets to Read at APSU on September 15th

Clarksville, TN – A few months ago, the noted American poet and Guggenheim Fellow Michael Burkard flipped through a new book of poetry by Amanda Auchter. It took him a while to finish it because he kept pausing to think about what he’d just read.

“I am often stopped by set moments and phrasings in these poems, and despite the emotional facts of so many of the poems, I rest there, among various phrases, and feel language doing its, often strangely, quiet part,” he said.

The book, “The Glass Crib,” recently won the 2010 Zone 3 First Book Award for Poetry, an annual contest hosted by Austin Peay State University’s literary journal and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.

APSU hosts 16th annual Bread and Words Reading on November 23rd

Clarksville, TN – To help usher in the Thanksgiving holiday, the Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature will host the 16th annual Bread and Words Benefit to raise public awareness of hunger in the local community.

The event will start with the serving of a simple meal of soup and bread at 6:00pm, Tuesday, November 23rd in the Morgan University Center Ballroom, followed by a 7:00pm reading. A donation of $5.00 for the Salvation Army is requested at the door.

Award-winning writer Richard Bausch to read at APSU on October 28th

Clarksville, TN – The great short story writer Bernard Malamud once wrote, “In a few pages a good story provides the complexity of life while producing the surprise and effect of knowledge.”

Anyone familiar with the work of Richard Bausch knows that the Memphis-based writer clearly understands this principle, leading him to become the late Malamud’s heir as the American master of short fiction. [Read more]
