Austin Peay State University classics students “sacrifice” golden eagle during Homecoming ceremony

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Tim Winters, Austin Peay State University (APSU) Latin professor, raised his face to the warm, bright sky and said, “It’s a good day to sacrifice an eagle.”

Nearby, a golden eagle (or maybe just a turkey-shaped piñata, painted gold) was placed on an altar in the center of campus for the annual Homecoming sacrifice.

APSU Latin/geology student headed to Europe for Roman site excavation

Clarksville, TN – On a sweltering afternoon in Tallil, Iraq, a U.S. Army soldier named Elizabeth Wilcox paused on her way to the gym to examine what looked like seashells on the desert floor.

Centuries ago, the Euphrates River had flowed through the area, surrounding a nearby stone structure some scholars believe was the Tower of Babel, but that channel of the river had long since turned to dust.

Austin Peay State University alumna Orton heading to grad school at Cambridge

Clarksville, TN – In certain academic circles, Dr. Simon Keynes, Elrington and Bosworth professor of Anglo-Saxon history at the University of Cambridge, is considered a “rock star.”

In addition to being the great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin and the grandnephew of economist John Maynard Keynes, the renowned professor is a member of the British Academy and a fellow with the Royal Historical Society.
