APSU holds topping-off event at new Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University held a topping-off ceremony Tuesday, April 16th at the construction site of the new Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building.
James Maynard, a 1956 alumnus, local business and APSU supporter for whom the building is named, was the first to sign during the event.

National Science Foundation-funded program at APSU awards 16 scholarships for students to study STEM disciplines

Clarksville, TN – A new National Science Foundation-funded program at Austin Peay State University recently awarded 16 scholarships to community college transfer students, active duty military personnel, veterans and dependents interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines for the 2012-13 academic year.
The project, titled “Increasing the Number of Regional Community College Graduates and Active Duty Military Personnel, Veterans and Dependents Enrolling in and Completing a STEM Baccalaureate Degree,” awarded scholarships to nine APSU students and one Volunteer State Community College student thanks to the more than $500,000 the NSF is providing APSU over the next five years. APSU hosting career fair for students in STEM field

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University College of Science and Mathematics will host a career fair from 10:00am to 2:00pm on February 27th, in the Morgan University Center Ballroom.
The event will allow students to meet with regional employers to discuss career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. [Read more]
Northeast Middle School Students Place First in STEM Competition

Clarksville, TN – The Northeast Middle School Robotics Class needs our help. In December last year, these highly talented and motivated students placed first in the robot programming category in Memphis, TN, which is quite a feat for this young program.
Led by educators Polly Kopp and Whitney Joyner, the success of these students offers them a chance to compete in the LEGO Open Invitational Tournament in California this May.

Clarksville, TN – Scientists in all fields often face the challenge of explaining to the public why their research is important. Scientific jargon and technical terms often bog down interviews and simple conversations, occasionally leaving people more confused than when they started listening to these individuals.
On November 7th, a group of Austin Peay State University faculty members and students traveled to Knoxville for a National Science Foundation workshop that addressed this exact problem. [Read more]

Poppas, Deputy Commander (Operations), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), serving as the keynote speaker.

Clarksville Montgomery County School System receives $2.5 million DoDEA Grant for STEM

Montgomery County, TN – The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System will receive a $2.5 million award under the 2012 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant for enhancement of its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs.
The grant, to be administered over three years, comes through DoDEA’s Military-Connected Local Educational Agencies for Academic and Support Programs (MCASP) Projects. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Three Austin Peay State University professors are on the lookout for community college students, active duty military personnel, veterans and dependents interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines.
That’s because the National Science Foundation is awarding them more than $500,000 over the next five years to offer scholarships for qualified students in those areas.

Clarksville Montgomery County School System Teachers receive $20,000 Grant from Dow Corning Foundation

Clarksville, TN – The Dow Corning Foundation has approved a $20,000 grant to Clarksville-Montgomery County School System to fund the Teacher Extern Program, started this summer with 10 local industries, including Hemlock Semiconductor Group’s Clarksville site.
The program partners math and science teachers from CMCSS with engineers and industry professionals to better understand real life application of the subject they teach.

APSU to break ground on August 17th on new Math and Computer Science Building

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this year, a narrow brick house off Ford Street, behind the Austin Peay State University Hemlock Semiconductor Building, was torn down. All that remains in its absence is a dirt lot, with a few patches of grass and gravel covering it.
At 10:00am on August 17th, shovels will plunge into that dry earth to mark the beginning of construction on APSU’s new $6.7 million mathematics and computer science building. The two-story classroom building, designed by Rufus Johnson Associates, is projected to open in the spring of 2014.
